Rearview camera systems have been mandatory equipment on automobiles in the US since 2018. However, since then, they have continuously encountered technical issues, prompting major automakers to issue frequent product recalls.

Unlike traditional rearview mirrors, backup cameras often suffer from display issues, failing to capture or display critical information, or even malfunctioning, which can be hazardous when backing up.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there have been 181 recalls related to backup cameras since 2018, affecting over 12.3 million vehicles in the US. In the first five months of 2025 alone, there have been 30 recalls involving backup cameras, impacting nearly 2.8 million cars.

Ford stands out as the automaker with the highest number of recalls due to faulty backup cameras. Since 2018, the company has recalled 4.6 million vehicles across 35 separate campaigns.

Recently, the automaker announced yet another recall due to backup camera issues, affecting over one million vehicles. Other prominent brands like Nissan, Jaguar, Volkswagen, Tesla, and Hyundai have also faced similar troubles with their backup camera systems.

The spate of incidents involving backup cameras highlights the challenges faced by almost all automotive brands in integrating modern technologies. While these innovations offer numerous benefits, frequent malfunctions erode consumer trust.
