According to Carscoops, MINI was once synonymous with precise handling, an efficient chassis, and a connected driving experience. For many years, this experience came with the option of a manual transmission, but that is about to change.

Despite a short-term surge in demand, MINI has confirmed that its product lineup will continue to feature automatic transmissions in the near future.

As early as mid-2023, MINI voiced its plans to discontinue manual transmissions. However, this option lingered for quite some time, even making an appearance in the convertible variant of the MINI Cooper JCW. Since then, manual transmissions have completely disappeared from MINI’s product range, and a recent report confirms that the brand has no plans to bring them back.

In a conversation with Drive, James Orlov, Product Director for MINI in Australia and New Zealand, confirmed this decision.

“With new generations of customers, manual transmissions are simply not a priority. As emissions standards evolve towards Euro 7, this trend will likely become even more pronounced,” remarked James Orlov.

Sales figures support this shift, indicating that only 3 out of 100 people would opt for a manual transmission in a MINI. Such low demand is considered disproportionate to the number of tests and certifications a car manufacturer must undergo to bring a product to market.

“There are no plans for manual transmissions. Customer demand for manuals is very low, and the emissions requirements and associated testing make this option a low priority for us,” asserted Alex Brockhoff, General Manager of MINI in Australia and New Zealand.

He even pointed out that there aren’t many manual transmission options among competitor models, making the effort to develop a manual transmission somewhat futile.

Carscoops observes that manual transmissions are declining globally, not just in Australia or the US. While some supercars still feature three pedals, the number of affordable high-performance cars with manual transmissions will continue to dwindle.
