China’s Yiche Auto News has just released the ranking of the 20 best-selling models in the billion-people market in the first half of 2025. The list has shown a significant shift in the competitive landscape, especially in the new energy vehicle (NEV) segment.
The top 10 trends favor new energy vehicles, including pure electric and plug-in hybrid cars. Domestic Chinese brands dominate, with only 8 models from joint ventures or foreign brands making it to the top 20.
The list of the 20 best-selling models in the Chinese market shows that domestic brands are putting on an impressive performance. Among them, the Geely Geome Xingyuan has risen to the top position.
Specifically, the Geely Geome Xingyuan, with a starting price of 69,800 RMB (approximately $9,900), claimed the number 1 spot by selling 204,940 units in the first six months. This achievement helped the Geely model surpass competitors such as the BYD Seagull and Tesla Model Y. The Xingyuan is also the only model in the top 20 to cross the 200,000-unit sales mark.
The Geely Geome Xingyuan is China’s best-selling car in the first half of the year.
Meanwhile, the BYD Seagull maintained its momentum with an average monthly sales volume of about 30,000 units. In total, in the first six months of this year, the vehicle achieved sales of 174,912 units, ranking second.
The Tesla Model Y ranked third with 171,491 units sold. Although it ranked third overall, it is the best-selling premium pure electric car in China, in the price segment of 200,000 RMB (700 million VND) and above.
The Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, once the best-selling electric car in China, ranked fourth with 171,064 units delivered to customers. It still maintains its leadership position in the small electric car segment. This is in stark contrast to the situation in the Vietnamese market, where the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV has modest sales.
The fifth position belonged to the BYD Qin Plus with 163,603 units sold in the first half of the year. The remaining positions in the top 10 were occupied by the Xiaomi SU7, Geely Xingyue L, BYD Song Plus, Volkswagen Lavida, and Nissan Sylphy, respectively.
The remaining 10 models in the top 20 included the BYD Qin L, Volkswagen Sagitar, Volkswagen Passat, Changan CS75 Plus, BYD Song Pro, Toyota Camry, Volkswagen Magotan, Toyota RAV4 Rongfang, Li Auto L6, and BYD Seal 06.

In the top 20 mentioned above, BYD contributed 6 representatives, while Volkswagen had 4 models. With these results, it’s no surprise that Volkswagen is the highest-selling international brand in the Chinese market in the first half of the year.
At the same time, the absence of Japanese brands in the top 20 is notable. Only two Japanese brands, Toyota and Nissan, made it to the list. Meanwhile, Japanese brands like Honda and Mazda were not present.
