Mazda is concurrently developing two SUV models, the CX-5 and CX-50.

Notably, both fall under the two-row SUV segment, utilize similar technical platforms, and feature almost identical price points. This has sparked curiosity among consumers and industry experts regarding the brand’s product strategy.

2026 Mazda CX-5

When Mazda introduced the CX-50 in 2021, many believed it would eventually replace the CX-5 – a SUV that has been on the market for over a decade. However, not only has the CX-5 avoided discontinuation, but it has also entered a new generation with significant upgrades, increasingly matching the CX-50 in design and configuration.

The new Mazda CX-5 boasts a more substantial and robust appearance due to its refined dimensions. Its length has been extended by 114 mm, the wheelbase by 76 mm, and it is marginally wider by 13 mm compared to its predecessor.

Mazda has confirmed the release of a hybrid version of the CX-5 in 2027, featuring a new engine technology dubbed SkyActiv-Z. This technology promises improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, aligning with the global trend towards electrification.

This has led to questions about why Mazda is developing two nearly identical SUVs. Addressing the controversy, Stefan Meisterfeld, Vice President of Strategic Planning at Mazda North America, stated, “Mazda believes that both the CX-5 and CX-50 can coexist because it is the largest segment in the industry.”

According to Meisterfeld, Mazda positions the CX-5 as an SUV for urban users who prioritize sophistication, convenience, and harmonious design. In contrast, the CX-50 is geared towards customers who embrace exploration and adventure, offering a tougher and more terrain-focused style.

Mazda has yet to announce the US pricing for the 2026 CX-5, but according to sources, the vehicle will be imported from Japan. This could result in a substantial import tax of up to 27.5%, impacting the overall cost of bringing the vehicle to market.
