Choosing a highway route for your journey can significantly reduce travel time when driving. However, it’s important to be aware of potential risks in case your vehicle encounters a breakdown and becomes inoperable.

According to Clause 2, Article 25 of the 2024 Law on Road Traffic Order and Safety, drivers are permitted to stop or park their vehicles in the emergency lane running in the same direction as the traffic flow in case of technical failure or other force majeure circumstances that necessitate stopping or parking.

If your vehicle cannot be moved into the emergency lane, you must use hazard lights and place warning signs or lights at least 150 meters behind your vehicle. It is also crucial to promptly notify the traffic police or the highway management agency responsible for ensuring traffic order and safety on that route.

To minimize the risk of vehicle breakdowns while driving on highways, drivers should proactively inspect and maintain their vehicles before embarking on their journey. This includes checking all four tires, the spare tire, the battery, brake fluid, engine oil, coolant, and windshield washer fluid.

Of these, the tires warrant special attention, especially when your route includes highways. Unlike regular roads, highways involve sustained high-speed driving. Therefore, any issues with the tires that go unchecked or unaddressed can lead to potential hazards and safety concerns while driving on highways.

For electric vehicles, it’s crucial to ensure sufficient charge before entering a highway. Make sure the remaining range is greater than the length of the highway section you plan to travel. It is also recommended to continuously monitor the battery level to prevent running out of charge while on the highway.
