According to Carscoops, the Toyota Corolla Cross made its debut five years ago when the Japanese automaker decided to create an SUV variant of the popular Corolla lineup.
However, the Toyota Corolla Cross hasn’t quite hit the same level of success in Europe, even with a recent update. In the first four months of this year, Toyota sold 11,259 units of the Corolla Cross on the continent, a 14% decrease compared to the same period last year. In contrast, the more stylistically bold Toyota C-HR sold 41,950 units during the same period.
Speaking to Auto News, Andrea Carlucci, head of product and marketing strategy for Toyota Europe, acknowledged that the Corolla Cross needs a more compelling design to boost its appeal in Europe. “We don’t have a perfect Corolla Cross in Europe. If we can bring more appeal to European customers, sales will go up,” shared Carlucci.
There is no word yet on when Toyota will introduce the next generation of the Corolla Cross. However, Carscoops believes that an updated version of the subcompact SUV is due soon.
Carlucci suggests that if the vehicle retains the TNGA platform, Toyota will have the flexibility to develop various body styles for different markets, potentially offering a unique and more intriguing design for the European market. “The cars need to be what Europeans want, not a mix of what US and Japanese customers expect,” he explained.
The current-generation Toyota Corolla Cross has been on the market for a while, but Toyota has recently refreshed it with an update for all markets. Notably, Europe and Japan also received the GR Sport variant. However, Carscoops believes that the overall design of the Corolla Cross still falls short of the visual appeal offered by the C-HR or even the standard Corolla.
