Ferrari has teased the debut of its first-ever electric vehicle, slated for next spring, after revealing the electric “heart” of the yet-to-be-named Elettrica later this year. As this is uncharted territory for the iconic Italian supercar brand, they seem to be doing their homework, including looking at non-rival automakers, to find the best solution.
And this might be why the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra was spotted leaving the Ferrari factory gates in Maranello; if you want to compare and study a fast, powerful, and speedy electric car, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is the logical choice.
The yellow Xiaomi SU7 Ultra with dual silver stripes was spotted exiting Ferrari’s Maranello headquarters in Italy. Ferrari, like any other brand, continuously purchases and borrows cars from rivals for research purposes. But even just five years ago, the idea of this world-famous sports car maker considering a Chinese car worthy of study would have been laughable.
A lot has changed since then. The SU7 Ultra is now the fastest mass-produced electric car around the Nürburgring, with a time of 7:04.957, nearly three seconds quicker than the Porsche Taycan. An Ultra prototype even achieved a time of 6:22.091, outpacing all but the VW ID.R race car and the Porsche Le Mans 919 Evo.
The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra boasts a three-motor electric powertrain that generates 1,526 horsepower, propelling the car from 0 to 60 mph in 1.98 seconds and reaching a top speed of 223 mph.
Ferrari already knows a thing or two about handling, so their focus seems to be on the electric platform and aspects like thermal management during sustained high-speed driving. And we know that Xiaomi’s CEO shares a similar interest in Ferrari’s products. Last year, Lei Jun was spotted driving a red Purosangue, and we’re sure he’ll be eager to get his hands on Maranello’s electric offering when deliveries commence in the fall of 2026.
Insiders suggest that the Italian brand’s first electric vehicle will be a limited-edition model to ease the public into the idea of a gas-engine-less horse on the hood, and their second electric car, likely a crossover, will be more significant.
However, according to Reuters last month, Ferrari has delayed the production of this model until 2028 due to weak demand in the luxury electric car segment.
