In a recent decision, Korean automaker Kia has delayed the launch of the fifth-generation Sorento (codenamed MQ5) to late 2027, a year later than initially planned.
This change aims to optimize the lifecycle of the current generation (MQ4), which has maintained stable global sales since its release in 2020.
As a result, Kia doesn’t want to rush the replacement of a model that is still highly successful. Extending the product lifecycle is believed to help the company continue to meet the strong demand for hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants, which are gaining a larger share in the portfolio. At the same time, this decision also helps avoid the risk of sales being affected during the peak consumption cycle of MQ4.
Additionally, the delayed schedule provides Kia with more time to perfect the MQ5, especially in terms of new electrification technologies and the next-generation software platform.
Despite the later launch, the MQ5 is expected to be a significant step forward in both design and technology. This SUV will inherit its design language from the flagship EV9 electric vehicle, featuring vertical LED headlights, “Starmap” graphic taillights, and an overall modern and robust appearance.
The interior of the MQ5 will undergo a comprehensive upgrade with a fully digital cockpit. The highlight is the pair of 12.3-inch curved screens and the new Pleos OS operating system, promising a significantly enhanced user experience. Higher-end versions will feature independent seating in the second row, along with ventilation and the use of more premium materials.
Kia confirms that the MQ5 will continue to focus on electrified powertrain options. It will be equipped with a 1.6L turbocharged engine combined with an electric motor in two hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. Notably, the PHEV version is expected to offer an all-electric range of up to 100 km, a significant improvement over the current generation.
This move is seen as a step towards Kia’s green transformation strategy for the next decade and will help the company compete more effectively in markets with stringent emission standards, such as Europe and North America.
Kia plans to introduce the Sorento MQ5 in the Korean market in the fourth quarter of 2027, followed by launches in the US and Europe in early 2028. The starting price of the MQ5 is expected to increase by 5-6 million won (approximately 104.5-130.7 million VND) compared to the current MQ4, mainly due to larger dimensions, additional technology, and powertrain upgrades.
The delay in the launch of the MQ5 reflects Kia’s flexible strategy in the face of intense competition in the SUV market and consumers’ increasing focus on technology, fuel efficiency, and sustainability.
