Lamborghini is considering a shift in its electrification strategy as global demand for premium electric vehicles shows signs of slowing down.
In a recent interview with CarExpert magazine (Australia), CEO Stephan Winkelmann suggested that the company may abandon its plans for pure electric vehicles and instead focus on plug-in hybrid technology (PHEV).
For now, Lamborghini intends to change the powertrain of its next-generation Urus SUV from electric to plug-in hybrid.
Additionally, the company will delay the launch of its first electric vehicle (developed from the 2023 Lanzador concept) from 2028 to 2029. The Italian brand is also uncertain whether this new model should remain purely electric.
When asked if the commercial version of the Lanzador could feature a PHEV instead of an EV powertrain, Mr. Winkelmann replied, “Lamborghini needs to make a decision soon, but all options are still on the table.”
This statement marks a turning point in Lamborghini’s electrification strategy. Previously, the company had firmly committed to electric vehicles, starting with the introduction of hybrid technology in its flagship models such as the Revuelto, Urus SE, and most recently, the Temerario, unveiled in August 2024.
However, the Lamborghini CEO believes that timing is crucial: “Lamborghini doesn’t need to be a pioneer, but it must be present when the market is ready. For Lamborghini, this is a prerequisite for success.”
Mr. Winkelmann also emphasized that Lamborghini is not just a technology company but a brand associated with emotions and unique driving experiences, which electric vehicles currently cannot fully replicate.
Moreover, the Italian supercar maker has not entirely given up on internal combustion engines. Lamborghini is actively researching synthetic fuel (e-fuel) solutions to maintain its iconic V12 engines in its product lineup.
If sustainable fuels prove feasible, it would be a significant opportunity for the company to retain internal combustion engines. Lamborghini wishes to maintain these engines for as long as possible, at least in its two flagship supercars.
