Rolls-Royce Unveils Three Bespoke Models Inspired by Ancient Dunhuang Cave Art
The trio, comprising the Phantom Extended, Black Badge Cullinan, and Black Badge Spectre, is the result of a collaboration between the global Bespoke Collective team and the Shanghai Private Office, dedicated to top-tier clients seeking unique personalization.
A Modern Take on Ancient Cultural Iconography
The main source of inspiration comes from the murals in the Mogao Caves, a cultural heritage site dating back over 1,000 years, located on the ancient Silk Road in the Gobi Desert. The images within these caves profoundly express the abstract thoughts of Eastern culture, which Rolls-Royce has reinterpreted through modern artisanal design language.
Phantom Extended: Art in Leather and Starlight
The Phantom Extended features a two-tone color scheme: a Ningye Purple body (a deep purple inspired by the night sky over the Great Wall) and an English White roof. The highlight is the Silken Spirit motif – a hand-painted illustration on the C-pillar, depicting the “Spirit of Silk.”
Inside, the Starlight Headliner features 1,344 optical fibers and 192 “shooting stars” to create a mesmerizing movement effect. Adorning the dashboard is a hand-painted leather artwork depicting Apsaras (celestial beings in Buddhist culture), crafted using traditional Chinese woodblock printing techniques.
Black Badge Cullinan: Danqian Pink and Perforated Art
The Cullinan Series II stands out with its Danqian Pink exterior—a shade of pink inspired by ancient paintings. The front seats feature Blushing Pink perforated leather with a cloud-like pattern comprising 107,000 perforations, evoking the skies above the Goodwood factory. The rear seats contrast with navy leather and pink accents.
The Silken Spirit motif continues as a stainless-steel inlay on the control panel and between the rear seats. The Starlight Headliner mimics the Silken Spirit motif with soft lighting.
Black Badge Spectre: Qingshan Blue and Turchese Illumination
The Spectre is clad in Qingshan Blue (mountain blue) with a Diamond Black roof, accented by a Turchese illuminated grille. The cockpit combines Turchese and Black leather, while the rear seats feature Black leather with white stitching.
The Silken Spirit motif is illuminated on the lighted treadplates and is also featured in the 1,344-star Starlight Headliner and Starlight Doors. The two-tone wool carpet complements the interior color scheme.
A Dialogue Between East and West, Past and Present
With this trio of unique vehicles, Rolls-Royce not only celebrates Chinese artistic heritage but also showcases its Bespoke capabilities in infusing profound cultural narratives into every design detail. This is a testament to a future where every Rolls-Royce can become a “mobile work of cultural art.”
