Mazda Unveils Long-Term Product Strategy for the Decade Ahead

Japanese automaker Mazda emphasizes its commitment to expanding its electrified vehicle lineup, focusing on homegrown hybrid SUVs, while also maintaining its traditional sports car lineage with future-oriented adjustments.

The highlight of Mazda’s electrification plan is the introduction of a hybrid variant of its best-selling CX-5 SUV in 2027. While the new generation CX-5 was launched in 2025, the hybrid version will require additional time for refinement.

The upcoming hybrid powertrain for the CX-5 is expected to be a combination of the SkyActiv-Z 2.5L gasoline engine and an electric motor. This in-house developed system marks the first appearance of Mazda’s proprietary hybrid technology in a flagship model in the US market. The development of this technology is anticipated to grant Mazda greater control over performance, cost, and driving experience, which are core values in their product philosophy.

Currently, Mazda’s electrified vehicle offerings in the US include the CX-50 hybrid, CX-70 PHEV, and CX-90 PHEV. With the addition of the CX-5 hybrid in 2027, Mazda projects that the CX-5 and CX-50 hybrid models will collectively achieve annual sales of 250,000 units in the US market. This ambitious goal is feasible given the rising consumer preference for fuel-efficient and versatile SUVs.

In parallel with its hybrid lineup, Mazda is also preparing to introduce its first pure electric vehicle in the US market within the next few years. While details are scarce, the company has revealed that the vehicle will belong to the mid-size SUV segment and meet stringent North American safety and performance standards.

Moreover, Mazda’s joint venture with a Chinese automotive partner will play a significant role in expanding its global EV portfolio. Specifically, two new models, the Mazda6e (sedan) and CX-6e (SUV), are in development and will be launched soon, targeting tech-savvy and environmentally conscious younger customers.

A notable aspect of Mazda’s long-term strategy is the revival of its iconic sports car lineage. The company plans to unveil the production version of the Iconic SP concept during the 2026-2028 period. The Iconic SP will be built on an all-new electric platform, merging the modern Kodo design philosophy with Mazda’s signature sporty driving experience.

Concurrently, Mazda has also teased the next-generation MX-5 with design refinements and an upgraded 4-cylinder gasoline engine. This move preserves Mazda’s sports car heritage while adapting to stringent emission and performance requirements.

While major competitors like Toyota, Honda, and Hyundai have aggressively pursued hybrid technology for years, Mazda’s approach has been more measured. This strategy reflects the company’s prudence and unique vision: refraining from hastily embracing the electric vehicle trend, and instead prioritizing market suitability and consumer behavior.
