In a recent announcement, Ford’s CEO confirmed that the company will reveal significant electric vehicle plans on August 11th.
Specifically, the automaker Ford will share details about its plans to develop an entirely new electric vehicle model, along with a new technical platform designed and manufactured in the US.
This electric vehicle will feature an entirely new electrification platform, offering advanced technology, reasonable costs, and spacious interiors. It targets the mass market rather than solely focusing on the premium segment.
Previously, Ford revealed that it was working on a secret project for affordable electric vehicles. Led by former Tesla engineer Alan Clarke, the project aims to create a flexible platform applicable to various vehicle types, including small SUVs, small pickups, and commercial vehicles.
The estimated price range for the vehicles in this project is $25,000-$30,000, which is approximately 655-786 million VND. This pricing strategy aims to compete directly with popular electric vehicles from Chinese manufacturers and Tesla.
However, amidst challenges in the US electric vehicle market, including changes in tax incentive policies, emission standards, and consumer hesitancy, Ford has temporarily shifted its focus to hybrid vehicles and traditional SUV and pickup models. This shift was evident in the company’s decision to cancel plans for a three-row electric SUV late last year.
Despite these adjustments, Ford’s latest revelations indicate that the company hasn’t entirely abandoned its electric vehicle expansion strategy. Instead, it is preparing for a foundational step to rebuild its electrification portfolio from scratch, with higher expectations for efficiency, cost, and market share.
As of mid-2025, Ford has only three officially launched electric vehicles: the Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, and the E-Transit commercial van. In comparison, rival General Motors has nearly 12 electric vehicle models, showing that Ford is still in the early stages of development.
According to US market statistics, GM (under the Chevrolet brand) has surpassed Ford to become the second-largest electric vehicle manufacturer in the country, only behind Tesla. Meanwhile, Ford’s revenue primarily comes from traditional gasoline and hybrid vehicles, particularly SUVs and pickups.
In the Vietnamese market, Ford has not yet officially distributed any electric or hybrid vehicles. However, the company has confirmed plans to launch the Mustang Mach-E on August 15, 2025, marking the first time the electric SUV will be available through an authorized dealer in Vietnam. Previously, the Mustang Mach-E was only imported privately into the country.
