Chevrolet has set a new record in the electric vehicle arena, with its Silverado EV traveling an astonishing 1,704.6 kilometers on a single charge.

This feat far surpasses the previous record held by the Lucid Air, which achieved 1,205 kilometers just a month ago, and showcases the realistic potential of electric vehicles’ range capabilities under optimal conditions.

According to Chevrolet, this endeavor began as a small project undertaken by a group of General Motors engineers based in Michigan, USA. However, the test eventually evolved into a real-world assessment of the 2026 Silverado EV’s performance capabilities.

The vehicle used was the Silverado EV Max Pack Work Truck—the lightest and most affordable standard version. Over seven days, a team of 40 GM employees took turns driving the truck on public roads around the Milford Proving Ground and Belle Isle in Detroit, Michigan.

To accomplish this remarkable feat, the test team implemented a series of optimizations to maximize the vehicle’s range. Driving speeds were maintained between 30 and 40 km/h in summer conditions to minimize air resistance and maximize energy efficiency.

While the Silverado used was a production model, it underwent minor adjustments to reduce drag and weight. These tweaks included lowering the windshield wiper arm, increasing tire pressure to the maximum recommended level, removing the spare tire, adjusting wheel angles, adding a tonneau cover for improved aerodynamics, and keeping the air conditioning off throughout the journey. However, no modifications were made to the vehicle’s hardware or software.

This implies that, theoretically, any owner of a Silverado EV could achieve similar results if the same operating conditions are replicated. Nonetheless, experts emphasize that this is not a realistic goal for the average driver, as a 1,700-kilometer journey is not practical for daily use.

The Silverado EV WT is equipped with a massive 205 kWh battery pack. According to EPA estimates, it offers a range of approximately 793 kilometers. The achievement of 1,704.6 kilometers represents a 214% increase in range over the initial assessment, highlighting the potential for extended range under favorable conditions.

It is important to note that Chevrolet’s test was conducted in an ideal environment with controlled traffic and operating conditions. In contrast, the previous record-holder, the Lucid Air, achieved its 1,205-kilometer feat by traversing various terrains, including highways, back roads, and mountainous regions.

Nevertheless, the Silverado EV’s new record signifies a significant step forward for heavy-duty electric vehicles in overcoming range anxiety, one of the primary concerns for consumers transitioning from gasoline to electric vehicles.
