Important Update for Vietnamese Motorists: Seamless Transition to Electronic Toll Collection
According to Clause 31 of Decree No. 119/2024/ND-CP, from October 1st, vehicle owners who have not switched to the new transportation account will not be allowed to pass through electronic toll collection (ETC) lanes.
Currently, there are approximately 6.3 million vehicles registered for ETC services (ePass and VETC) nationwide, equivalent to nearly 100% of cars. However, only about 30% have transitioned to the new transportation account, mainly due to a lack of awareness among vehicle owners.
Here’s how to switch to an ePass account:
If you have already linked your payment source to Viettel Money or an international credit card, your ePass account has automatically become a transportation account, and no further action is required.
If you haven’t linked a payment source yet, download the ePass app, register or log in, go to “Manage Payment Source,” and link your account to Viettel Money or an international credit card (a fee of 1-2% may apply). Follow the in-app instructions to complete the process.
Alternatively, you can use the Viettel Money app: link your bank account or top up your wallet to ensure sufficient balance for toll payments.
Here’s how to convert your VETC account into a transportation account:
Step 1: Log in to the VETC app and select “Account Upgrade.”
Step 2: Review your information and tap the “Upgrade” button.
Step 3: Enter the OTP sent to your registered phone number.
Step 4: Set a new password and tap “Continue.”
Step 5: Link your VETC wallet to your bank account under “Payment Linkage.” The balance in your “VETC Wallet” will be designated as your new transportation account balance, and the old “Transportation Account” balance will be gradually deducted until depleted.
It is important to maintain a sufficient balance in the payment method linked to your transportation account. Failure to do so may result in the following:
Your vehicle will not be allowed to pass through ETC lanes on expressways.
You may be directed to mixed toll lanes on national highways.
Alternatively, you may have to make direct payments at toll booths.
The Easy Switch: Upgrading from VETC and ePass to a Comprehensive Transportation Account
The new mandate, as per Decree No. 119/2024, states that from October 1st, vehicle owners who have not transitioned to the new transportation account will be unable to utilize the electronic toll collection (ETC) system. This means a seamless, cashless drive through the toll stations will no longer be an option for those who have not made the switch.
