California firefighters are perplexed by a bizarre incident involving a Honda Civic that was split in half. The driver of the vehicle should have sustained serious injuries or even died in the crash. However, the Calaveras Unified Fire Department could not find any sign of the driver in what was left of the Honda Civic.

This morning, firefighters responded to a vehicle that had veered off the road and collided with a tree on Lake Camanche Parkway in Burson,” the department posted on social media. “The driver had left the scene, and we are baffled as to how anyone could have walked away from this accident! The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation.”

The authorities could not locate the driver of the crashed vehicle.

Images from the scene in Burson, about 90 minutes southeast of Sacramento, show a sixth-generation Honda Civic Coupe, or rather what’s left of it, in a mangled state. The impact was so severe that it split the car in half, tearing the floor and blowing off the roof. It was hard to recognize it as a Honda Civic if not for details like the air conditioning unit and the third side window.

Sixth-generation Honda Civic Coupe

With the roof and windshield gone, the Honda Civic resembled a convertible. Prior to the accident, the car appeared to have been modified by its owner. Visible in the exposed engine compartment was a cone-shaped air filter and an aftermarket intake system. Next to it was a three-spoke classic steering wheel, similar to those often seen in ’70s van conversions with round windows and thick plush lining.

The Honda Civic had been modified with an aftermarket intake and air filter.

This aftermarket steering wheel meant that the driver’s airbag had been removed, while the passenger airbag had deployed. This detail made it even more incredulous that the fire department could not find the driver’s body in the Honda-branded seat.

The Honda Civic had been fitted with an aftermarket steering wheel, which removed the driver’s airbag.

Social media users have offered various theories to explain the incident. Some suggested that the car had been abandoned there long before the accident. A woman claimed she saw a man walking away from the scene, and if true, the driver was incredibly lucky.

So far, the police have been unable to locate the driver, despite searching the area and local hospitals.
