It’s easy to assume that owners of luxury vehicles would keep their paperwork in impeccable order. However, in Malaysia, this isn’t always the case. Over the past few months, the country’s Road Transport Department (JPJ) has seized 258 luxury and supercars for various legal and administrative violations.

The ongoing “Operation Luxury” in Malaysia targets vehicle owners with invalid insurance, driving licenses, expired vehicle registrations, fake license plates, or mismatched chassis/plate numbers. Thus far, JPJ has conducted three rounds of seizures, impounding 101 vehicles on June 24, an additional 53 on August 1, and 104 more on August 10.

Among the most notable confiscations were a green Lotus Elise, a yellow Lamborghini Huracan STO, a black Rolls-Royce Cullinan, a yellow Lamborghini Urus, a grey Aston Martin DBX, an orange Porsche Cayman GT4, and a red Ferrari 458 Italia. These are vehicles one wouldn’t typically associate with such violations.

Images posted on JPJ’s official social media pages also revealed other high-end vehicles, including various Porsche models like the Cayman, Cayenne, 911, and Panamera. Several premium Toyota models were also seized, such as the Land Cruiser 300 Series, Alphard, and Vellfire. Additionally, a number of sedans and coupes from BMW and Mercedes-Benz were impounded.

Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz vehicles were among the luxury brands seized.

A diverse range of luxury brands, including Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz, were targeted in the operation.

In three instances, vehicles were found to be driven by foreigners who hadn’t paid road tax and lacked valid insurance. Kuala Lumpur had the highest number of seizures, accounting for 93 of the 258 cases. Tuan Muhammad Kifli bin Ma Hassan, JPJ’s Senior Director of Enforcement, stated that vehicle owners were notified and urged to rectify the issues before the seizures took place.

The agency emphasized: “The implementation of Operation Luxury sends a clear message that JPJ will not compromise with any party that does not comply with traffic laws. Owning a luxury vehicle is not a reason to neglect the responsibilities of a lawful road user.” The authorities also urged vehicle owners to ensure that all relevant documents and licenses are up to date.

According to the New Straits Times, over 1,000 cases have been identified where road tax and insurance haven’t been renewed for extended periods, involving individuals ranging from celebrities to business tycoons. Paultan reports that, in most cases, vehicles impounded under the Malaysian Road Transport Act 1987 will be released once the owners settle the taxes and purchase insurance.

JPJ stated that Operation Luxury will continue regularly and encouraged the public to report traffic violations through a dedicated app or email.

It’s worth noting that Malaysia’s tax regime for luxury vehicles is quite steep. According to Wikipedia, buyers of premium cars in Malaysia incur a 30% import tax, a 10% sales tax, and a 105% excise duty, potentially tripling the price. Additionally, any vehicle priced above 200,000 RM (approximately 47,200 USD) is subject to a high-value goods tax ranging from 5% to 10%.
