Despite the failed merger between Nissan and Honda earlier this year, the two Japanese automakers have remained in communication. With Nissan’s future still uncertain, they continue to collaborate in the electric vehicle sector.
According to Nikkei Asia, Nissan and Honda are in discussions about the potential production of Honda-branded pickup trucks at the Canton plant in Mississippi, USA. This facility has previously assembled the Nissan Titan and currently operates below capacity. The Honda pickup truck produced here will be distinct from the existing Ridgeline model.
If this deal goes through, it will benefit both parties. Nissan will optimize its plant capacity and boost revenue, while Honda will gain a domestically produced product, circumventing import taxes. Additionally, it will strengthen the negotiating position of Japanese automakers in the US market.

Canton plant may also accommodate Mitsubishi models, in addition to Honda. Late May, Nissan confirmed ongoing discussions with Mitsubishi regarding potential vehicle production at the plant, although no final decision has been made.
Nissan is exploring ways to boost its global production. Earlier this week, Reuters reported a potential collaboration with Foxconn to manufacture electric vehicles at the Oppama plant in Japan, aiming to prevent the closure of this facility. However, neither party has confirmed this information.
Previously, Nissan had announced plans to cut 9,000 jobs, and a subsequent report suggested this number could double. By maximizing production at existing plants, the company may be able to minimize layoffs and protect its struggling workforce.
