According to Kyodo News, Honda plans to discontinue the production of motorcycles with engines of 50cc and lower in November 2025. This decision comes amidst tightening vehicle emission standards.

Kyodo News reports that Honda holds the largest market share in the 50cc and lower engine displacement motorcycle segment. Among these, the Super Cub, first introduced in 1958, has surpassed 100 million units produced and is one of the world’s most popular motorcycles.

In Japan, the Honda Super Cub is highly regarded for its fuel efficiency and is commonly used by postal and newspaper delivery services. However, the rise of electric bicycles and motorcycles has significantly impacted the popularity of the Super Cub and other small-engine motorcycles.

According to the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, approximately 1.98 million small-engine motorcycles were produced in 1980. However, production of these vehicles has declined, with only about 90,000 units manufactured in 2023.

Sources indicate that Honda views the production of small-engine motorcycles that meet stringent emission standards as a costly endeavor. This is believed to be a contributing factor in the company’s decision to discontinue the 50cc and lower engine displacement models in November 2025.

In the Vietnamese market, Honda currently does not offer any motorcycles with engines below 110cc in their official distribution lineup. Meanwhile, SYM is the only brand offering 50cc motorcycles to Vietnamese customers, including models such as the Elegant 50, Shark 50, Angela 50, Passing 50, Priti 50, Galaxy 50, and Attila 50.

At present, Vietnamese customers can still purchase the Honda Super Cub, but only with a 125cc engine option, starting at over VND 86.2 million.

According to Honda’s reported data, the fiscal year 2023 (from April 2023 to March 2024) saw a total of 2.1 million Honda motorcycles sold in Vietnam. With these sales figures, Honda currently holds an 82% market share, as per the data released by the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMM).
