“**Rumors Abound: Mitsubishi’s Iconic Montero (Pajero) SUV May Be Making a Comeback**”
There are whispers that the legendary Mitsubishi Montero, also known as the Pajero, may be making a comeback with a completely new look.
Leaked images of a prototype being tested in Europe have quickly caught the attention of off-road enthusiasts. While Mitsubishi has not confirmed anything, multiple sources indicate that the company is developing the next generation of the Montero, expected to launch in late 2025.
The Mitsubishi Montero was an iconic SUV in the 1980s and 1990s, famous for its victories at the Dakar Rally and its rugged performance. However, since the early 2000s, the model gradually disappeared from the US market and was discontinued globally. A turning point came in 2024 when Mitsubishi quietly re-registered the “Montero” trademark, signaling a potential revival plan.
Based on the leaked images, the new Mitsubishi Montero showcases a modern, boxy, and muscular design. It features vertical LED lights, a honeycomb grille, large skid plates, a rugged body, and a rear inspired by the Nissan Patrol. This style is influenced by the 2024 DST and Destinator concept models.
In the European market, the Montero is likely to offer a hybrid option, combining a 2.4L gasoline engine with an electric motor, similar to the Outlander’s 302 horsepower output. Alternatively, it may adopt Nissan Qashqai’s e-Power 1.5L drivetrain (190 horsepower). Keeping with its off-road heritage, the Mitsubishi Montero is expected to feature a full-time four-wheel-drive system.
In its “Momentum 30” plan announced in 2024, Mitsubishi stated that it would launch at least four new models by 2030, starting in 2026. One of these is described as a high-riding SUV with a bold style, likely referring to the Montero/Pajero successor.
