Recently published patent filings reveal that Ford is developing a new utility system, transforming its electric pickup trucks into ‘mobile homes’ for travel and camping enthusiasts.
The unique aspect is that these features are added without altering the original structure of the vehicle much.
The project, codenamed T3, falls under the premium electric pickup truck segment. These technologies will first be applied to an entirely new electric pickup model and then expanded to the subsequent generations of the Ranger, Maverick, and F-150. Ford submitted the design to the US Patent and Trademark Office in February 2024, and it was published in August 2025.
One of the standout improvements is the rear cabin door, which can be opened like an SUV trunk. This door consists of two connected panels: the upper panel is fixed, while the lower panel can rotate more than 90 degrees, expanding the cabin space outward and creating shade wherever desired. This design makes loading and unloading bulky items more accessible.
Ford is also developing a tent that attaches directly to the vehicle. The tent has a special pocket that snugly fits the mirror, and it can be expanded using straps and auxiliary pockets. Users can still opt for traditional pole and rope installations. This tent is suitable for both regular camping and ‘glamping’ – glamorous camping.
Inside the vehicle, the seats can be folded flat to create a bed. The seat heating and cooling system maintains a comfortable temperature, the map reading light can double as a reading lamp, and the seat massage system can be adjusted for inflation to create an ideal lying posture.
Ford assures that the battery is large enough to power the entire ‘mobile home’ for a few days without significantly impacting the driving range. The surrounding sensor system will alert if anyone approaches, ensuring safety during overnight stays.
This patent is part of Ford’s broader strategy, along with other inventions like a multipurpose front trunk, sliding drawers on the sides, and an outdoor movie screen. The aim is to create a pickup truck line that is not only powerful and practical but also rich in technological experiences for its users.
