According to Carscoops, a class-action lawsuit is in the works, alleging that the panoramic sunroofs on 2021 Toyota RAV4s in the US can unexpectedly shatter or explode. The case is awaiting court confirmation as a class-action lawsuit and is requesting a jury trial.

The initial lawsuit was filed back in 2023 by two Toyota RAV4 owners, Jeffrey Takili and Arecely Gamez. Takili experienced an explosion of his SUV’s sunroof less than a year after purchase.

Takili’s insurance company covered the repair costs, which were carried out by a non-Toyota dealer. However, he has since withdrawn from the lawsuit and is no longer listed as a plaintiff.

On the other hand, Gamez is pursuing the lawsuit. She claims that the sunroof on her 2021 RAV4 shattered just a month after purchase. After paying a $500 insurance deductible for a replacement, the new sunroof allegedly continued to break, resulting in a second $500 deductible.

The lawsuit alleges that Toyota has failed to address manufacturing challenges, as the panoramic sunroofs on their vehicles tend to shatter spontaneously.

The complaint asserts that the sunroofs on the Toyota RAV4s may shatter due to substandard manufacturing materials and/or processes and/or inherent defects in the design of the affected batch of vehicles.

Carscoops reports that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has received numerous complaints in recent years about Toyota RAV4 sunroofs shattering unexpectedly. Some drivers describe a sound akin to a gunshot, emphasizing the sudden and surprising nature of the incident.

Judge Dale A. Drozd of the US District Court has set a deadline of September 5 for the plaintiffs to file a motion for class-action certification regarding this matter. A preliminary trial date has also been set for March 23, 2027.
