In December 2024, the Omoda brand of Chinese automaker Chery introduced the C9, a new D-segment SUV, in Malaysia. Nearly a year later, Omoda has unveiled a more fuel-efficient plug-in hybrid version, the C9 PHEV.
True to its name, the Omoda C9 PHEV features a plug-in hybrid powertrain, comprising a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine that produces 143 horsepower and 215 Nm of torque. This is an upgraded version of the Super Hybrid System (SHS) currently used in the Jaecoo J7 PHEV.
Unlike the front-wheel-drive J7 PHEV, the Omoda C9 PHEV boasts an all-wheel-drive system thanks to a rear-mounted electric motor generating 283 horsepower and 310 Nm. Additionally, there are two front-mounted electric motors with outputs of 102 horsepower/170 Nm and 122 horsepower/220 Nm, coupled to a dedicated three-speed hybrid transmission, an upgrade from the single-speed unit in the Jaecoo J7 PHEV.
As a result, the Omoda C9 PHEV delivers a combined output of 597 horsepower and 915 Nm of torque. This makes it significantly more powerful than the conventional gasoline-powered version, which produces 261 horsepower and 400 Nm. With this impressive powertrain, the Omoda C9 PHEV can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds.
Omoda C9 PHEV’s Plug-in Hybrid System
The energy source for the electric motors is a 34.46 kWh LFP battery, which enables the vehicle to travel up to 150 kilometers solely on electric power, according to the WLTP standard. In hybrid mode, the total range extends to approximately 1,100 kilometers.
The Omoda C9 PHEV supports both fast DC charging at 70 kW and slower AC charging at 6.6 kW. Charging the battery from 30% to 80% takes around 25 minutes with DC charging, while charging from 30% to 100% using AC charging takes approximately 5.5 hours.
Charging Port of the Omoda C9 PHEV
Aside from the powertrain, the Omoda C9 PHEV is nearly identical to its gasoline-powered counterpart, with only minor differences. At the front, the PHEV features a small slit in the center of the lower bumper, which is absent on the gasoline model. On the left side of the vehicle, there is an additional charging port. At the rear, the PHEV sports a stylized “PHEV” logo and a “C9” emblem in blue.

Distinctive ‘C9’ Emblem
The interior of the Omoda C9 PHEV remains largely unchanged from the gasoline version, except for a few differences such as the drive mode selector knob, which has been adjusted to allow the choice between hybrid and pure electric modes. Additionally, the vehicle does not have a start/stop button on the dashboard; instead, it automatically starts when it detects the key inside the vehicle.
Spacious Interior with Dual 12.3-inch Screens
Ample Legroom in the Rear
Similar to the standard gasoline model, the Omoda C9 PHEV is equipped with MacPherson front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, along with Continuous Damping Control (CDC) adaptive suspension.
Detailed specifications of the Omoda C9 PHEV for the Malaysian market will be announced at a later date. However, it is expected that the PHEV will offer similar features to the gasoline-powered C9, especially considering the pricing. The estimated price of the Omoda C9 PHEV is 220,000 RM (approximately 1.37 billion VND). It will compete against the likes of the Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Fortuner.
It would not be surprising if Omoda & Jaecoo Vietnam plans to introduce the C9 and C9 PHEV to the local market in the future.
