A legendary Jaguar D-Type has emerged from 31 years of storage, capturing the attention of classic car enthusiasts. One of only 71 produced between 1954 and 1957, this model was designed to conquer the grueling 24 Hours of Le Mans, where the D-Type claimed a record-breaking three consecutive victories from 1955 to 1957.
This particular car, with the chassis number XKD 551, was delivered to its first owner in October 1957. Soon after, it was modified for road use, including the addition of passenger doors, a windscreen, and the removal of the center divider. In 1963, the car changed hands and eventually landed in the possession of Australian F1 driver Paul Hawkins.
By the 1970s, the road-use modifications were removed, restoring the D-Type to its original racing specification. The original inline-six engine was removed for preservation and replaced with another unit. From 1994 onwards, the car has been in the possession of a Swiss collector and mostly kept in storage. Notably, the original engine underwent a comprehensive refurbishment in 2005 and was recently reinstalled.
The rare Jaguar will be auctioned by Broad Arrow Auctions. Notably, XKD 551 is eligible to participate in prestigious historic racing events such as the Goodwood Revival, Mille Miglia Storica, Le Mans Classic, and Monaco Historic Grand Prix. The estimated selling price is between 5.25 and 6.25 million Swiss Francs, equivalent to approximately 171-203 billion Vietnamese Dong.
The record for the most expensive Jaguar D-Type sold belongs to the 1956 Le Mans-winning car of the Ecurie Ecosse team, which fetched $21.78 million in 2016. Experts believe its value has likely increased since then.
