According to Car News China, Xiaomi has just decided to lift the output power restrictions on their supercar electric vehicle, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, following intense backlash from vehicle owners.
The controversy erupted when Xiaomi released software update 1.7.0, which limited the maximum power of the SU7 Ultra from 1,548 horsepower to just 900 horsepower under normal driving conditions.
To unlock the full power of the SU7 Ultra, owners were required to complete a lap on an approved race track. The update also introduced a 60-second wait time to control the launch process, preventing sudden acceleration after stopping at a red light.
A spokesperson for Xiaomi Auto stated that these restrictions were implemented to ensure safety, noting that the extremely high performance of the SU7 Ultra demands specific operating conditions and experienced drivers.
“The 1,548 horsepower output is designed for track use, with appropriate tires and preparation. We want to ensure that owners can safely enjoy this performance,” said the Xiaomi Auto spokesperson.

Despite these safety precautions, the restrictions sparked intense debates among those who had paid 529,900 CNY (approximately 73,000 USD) for the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra specifically for its impressive acceleration and power capabilities.
Car News China reported heated discussions on online forums and social media platforms in China, with some owners believing they should have unrestricted access to the advertised features, while others supported the manufacturer’s safety-first approach.
Faced with mounting pressure, Xiaomi ultimately retracted the performance limitations, acknowledging the need for more transparent communication regarding future software updates.

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra was first introduced in July 2024 as a high-performance version of the Xiaomi SU7 electric sedan.
Powered by three HyperEngine V8 electric motors, the SU7 Ultra delivers a maximum output of 1,548 horsepower, enabling it to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in a breathtaking 1.98 seconds and reach a top speed of approximately 350 km/h.
Equipped with the CATL Qilin 2.0 battery pack, the supercar can fast-charge from 10% to 80% in just 11 minutes. With a full charge, the SU7 Ultra offers a maximum range of 630 km.
Priced at 529,900 CNY (approximately 73,000 USD), the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra is a quarter of the price of the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT – a 1,034-horsepower electric sedan.
