A BYD Song Plus EV braves a lightning storm, showcasing its impressive safety features.

In a viral video from China, a brave BYD Song Plus EV faces a lightning storm, enduring three consecutive strikes with no apparent damage.

Dashboard camera footage from another vehicle captures the dramatic event as three bright bolts of lightning strike the car amid a heavy downpour. Remarkably, the driver emerges unscathed, thanks to the car’s protective features.

Following the incident, the vehicle was thoroughly inspected by technicians who found no issues with the critical components of the electric drive system: the battery, electronic controller, and motor. The car’s metal body acted as a “Faraday cage,” directing the lightning’s electricity safely into the ground and away from the cabin. Only two small burn marks were visible on the roof where the lightning struck, with the rest of the car remaining intact.

Experts advise that in such situations, occupants should remain inside the vehicle, turn off electronic devices, close windows, retract the antenna, and wait at least 30 minutes after the last thunderclap before exiting.

The BYD Song Plus EV is the brand’s best-selling export model so far this year. Known as the BYD Sealion 6 in Vietnam, it was launched in April 2025 with two versions, both priced competitively between 839 and 936 million VND.

Positioned in the compact SUV segment, the Sealion 6 goes head-to-head with the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson, Ford Territory, and Honda CR-V.

Under the hood, the Sealion 6 boasts a plug-in hybrid DM-i powertrain, combining a 1.5L gasoline engine (96 hp, 122 Nm) with a potent electric motor (194 hp, 300 Nm) for a combined output of 214 hp. A second electric motor acts as a generator, not for propulsion.

Equipped with a 18.3 kWh BYD Blade battery, the Sealion 6 offers an impressive all-electric range of 100 km. Its fuel efficiency is rated at 3.5-4.7 liters/100 km combined, or an exceptional 1.1 liters/100 km if the battery is charged to over 70%.

In internal tests conducted in Vietnam, the Sealion 6 achieved a remarkable range of over 1,700 km on a single tank of fuel and a full battery charge.

The vehicle comes with a 2.2 kW portable charger and supports AC Type 2 (6.6 kW) and DC CCS2 (18 kW) charging. Its V2L (Vehicle to Load) capability turns the car into a mobile power source. Regenerative braking also helps keep the battery charged during driving.
