Recently, the organizers of the Vietnam Motor Show (VMS) confirmed that the event will not take place in 2025.

Many previous participants are not yet ready, lacking new products to showcase, which, alongside market conditions, are the reasons cited by the organizers.

The organizers also confirmed that VMS will return in 2026 with significant changes. What can we expect from the 2026 Vietnam Motor Show?

Expanding Northward with a Larger Scale?

VMS organizers stated that upon its return, the exhibition will expand in scale, not only in display area but also in the number of participating brands and partners.

Last year, VMS 2024 was held at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (SECC) with nearly 2,500 m² of indoor and outdoor exhibition space. However, SECC may no longer be the ideal venue.

It’s almost certain that Vietnam’s premier auto show will take place in 2026 at the Vietnam Exhibition Center in Dong Anh, Hanoi. This venue boasts over 900,000 m² of exhibition space, including approximately 304,000 m² indoors.

The Kim Quy Exhibition Hall, designed as nine grand halls ranging from 9,419 to 10,478 m², is touted as the world’s largest circular exhibition hall.

At VMS 2024, 19 car brands and nearly 300 supporting industry booths participated. However, notable absentees included Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, VinFast, and all luxury car brands.

If VMS 2026 is held at the Vietnam Exhibition Center, VinFast’s participation is highly likely. The Vietnamese electric vehicle maker previously attended VMS 2019, showcasing its gasoline-powered Lux A2.0, Lux SA2.0, and Fadil models.

With an expanded scale, VMS 2026 could reclaim its title as Vietnam’s largest auto show. More brands operating in Vietnam are expected to participate, further boosting the event’s scale.

Vietnamese consumers will also benefit from VMS 2026’s new location and expanded scale, featuring more brands and display space.

At VMS 2024, while impressed by green vehicles and high-displacement motorcycles, many attendees regretted the absence of luxury cars and familiar brands.

Green Vehicles Remain the Focus?

Last year, VMS 2024 was themed “Technology Opens the Future of Green.”

This theme reflects market trends, as 2024 marked the first year the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA) detailed hybrid car sales, highlighting their importance in Vietnam.

Vietnam also welcomed new electric vehicle brands like BYD and Aion, with VinFast topping the market by year-end, outselling many gasoline-powered brands.

These green initiatives are expected to influence VMS 2026’s theme.

If BYD and VinFast participate, electric vehicles will undoubtedly be featured.

Brands like Suzuki, Toyota, and Honda are expanding their hybrid offerings and may showcase electric models. Mitsubishi, which displayed HEV versions of the Xforce and Xpander at the Bangkok Motor Show, may do the same at VMS 2026.

Luxury brands like Audi, Mercedes, Porsche, and Volvo, if participating, will likely exhibit hybrid and electric models. As major automakers shift to electric vehicles, reintroducing gasoline and hybrid models will be essential.

At VMS 2024, charging station developers and electric vehicle accessory providers participated. If green vehicles remain the focus, more supporting industry brands are expected to join VMS 2026.

VMS 2026 may also serve as a platform for brands to unveil new strategies in Vietnam.

BYD recently launched the Sealion 6 PHEV and will soon introduce the M9. VinFast could showcase its full electric lineup, including Green service vehicles.

Toyota may focus on hybrids, potentially unveiling a hybrid Vios. Honda could launch electric motorcycles, while Mitsubishi might display HEV versions of the Xforce and Xpander.

In July 2026, Hanoi will restrict gasoline motorcycles in its central area. If VMS 2026 is held in October, it will be an ideal platform for two-wheeler brands to showcase electric motorcycles.

The one-year hiatus provides automakers with ample preparation time. VMS 2026 is highly anticipated, as recent editions have fallen short in scale and participation.

The 2026 show will also shape Vietnam’s transportation electrification landscape. As gasoline restrictions take effect, automakers’ strategies will be closely watched by consumers and experts alike.
