Upon its debut, the Mercedes-AMG GT fell short of expectations, from its design and features to its powertrain, paling in comparison to the legacy of its predecessor, the iconic gull-wing Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG. It wasn’t until the introduction of the GT R, GT R Pro, and the track-ready Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series that the model began to reclaim some of its former glory.
Admiring the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series: The Missing Piece in Vu’s Impressive Mercedes Collection
The Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series is the one missing gem in the Mercedes-AMG GT collection of a prominent Vietnamese entrepreneur. And yes, you’ve guessed it right—aside from Dang Le Nguyen Vu, no one else boasts such an extensive and high-quality lineup of these vehicles.
This entrepreneur owns the standard model, the GT S Edition One, three GT R variants, and the GT R Pro. Naturally, if any private importer confidently announces the arrival of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series in Vietnam, he’d be the first to secure it.
In reality, the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series has already made an appearance in Vietnam, during the Gumball 3000 2024 rally, but it quickly moved on to another country.
The most captivating feature of the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series lies in its powertrain, directly inspired by the Mercedes-AMG GT3 race car. It’s equipped with a 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo engine, similar to the one found in the three GT R models owned by Vu.
However, Mercedes-AMG engineers have significantly enhanced this engine, introducing a new flat-plane crankshaft instead of the traditional cross-plane design, revised camshafts, and an updated exhaust system tailored to the refined engine. The dual-scroll turbochargers are now mounted on anti-friction bearings for improved throttle response.
These upgrades enable the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series to deliver a maximum output of 720 horsepower, a staggering 143 horsepower increase over the GT R. Peak torque also rises by 100 Nm to a total of 800 Nm.
Paired with a new 7-speed dual-clutch sport transmission, the engine propels the Mercedes-AMG GT Black Series from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.1 seconds, with a top speed of 325 km/h. In comparison, the GT R achieves the same sprint in 3.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 318 km/h.
