The Ferrari 250 LM secured victory at the 1965 Mugello GP, bearing the number 124 on its chassis. While the win itself wasn’t unprecedented—Ferrari was a dominant force in racing at the time—its historical significance lies in its status as a prototype rather than a GT racer.
This detail was not lost on Dutch automotive designer Niels van Roij, nor likely on the owner of a Ferrari 296 GTS. Somehow, their paths crossed, and they decided to transform the modern vehicle into a tribute to the Mugello-winning LM.
The task of transforming the 296 GTS fell to Autoforma, a team renowned for bespoke automotive projects. Their portfolio includes a custom Audi TTS, a unique paint job for a Tesla Model 3, and a full interior/exterior overhaul of a Jeep Wrangler 392.
Their latest endeavor, a 1,000-hour project, resulted in a one-of-a-kind design named after the Ferrari 250 LM #124.
This custom grand tourer received only exterior modifications, retaining the original powertrain. At its core, it remains the beloved GTS: a mid-mounted hybrid V6 producing 819 horsepower.
Technically, the hardtop two-seater’s silhouette remains largely unchanged, ensuring its recognizability. However, unique details set it apart from its production counterparts.
The most striking feature is its color. While red is a classic Ferrari hue, this shade is non-metallic, evoking the 1960s racing livery of the #124.
The red contrasts with black aerodynamic elements and vibrant yellow body accents. Bare metal wheels and calipers add a vintage touch, completing the retro-modern aesthetic.
A Ferrari 250 LM
Notable modifications include redesigned aluminum air intakes inspired by the LM’s vents. Similar cues appear in the rear grille.
On the glass engine cover, Autoforma installed Monza-style fuel caps—one for the gasoline engine and one for the hybrid system—both mounted on 3D-printed carbon components.
The lower body features glossy black plastic, while the carbon fiber front splitter, also black, has a slightly altered profile.
The interior features navy blue Alcantara on the seats, door panels, and lower dashboard. Aluminum accents—including shift paddles and wheel spokes—are hand-polished.
Subtle Autoforma branding appears throughout, with custom door sills engraved with LM-inspired motifs and the project name. A wooden wheel rim, crafted by hand, pays homage to the LM’s heritage.
Autoforma even customized the safety equipment, adding a chrome fire extinguisher with black leather trim.
The Ferrari 296 GTS inspired by the 250 LM #124 debuted at the Wheels at Mariënwaerdt Concours d’Elegance in Beesd, Netherlands, last weekend.
