India’s automotive market witnessed a historic day on September 22, 2025. The implementation of the reduced Goods and Services Tax (GST 2.0) and the onset of the Navratri festival led to an unprecedented surge in dealership footfall and vehicle deliveries. For many automakers, sales on this day were several times higher than the daily average, highlighting the combined impact of lower prices and festive season demand.
Among the automakers, Maruti Suzuki led the charge with a record-breaking 30,000 vehicle deliveries in a single day. This milestone, achieved in the company’s 35-year history, far exceeded its usual daily average of 5,000-6,000 units. Maruti Suzuki dealers reported long queues and overwhelming customer inquiries, prompting staff to work overtime.
The company recorded over 80,000 customer inquiries on September 22, 2025 alone. Since announcing new prices on September 18, Maruti Suzuki has been receiving approximately 15,000 bookings daily, a 50% increase compared to normal days. In less than a week, the booking tally reached 75,000 units. The demand for compact cars spiked following a price reduction of up to 130,000 Indian Rupees (approximately $1,700).
Hyundai also experienced its most successful sales day in five years, delivering 11,000 vehicles, significantly surpassing its daily average. The South Korean brand’s leadership attributed this success to the reduced GST and price adjustments, which drove more customers to showrooms. Tata Motors delivered 10,000 vehicles on the same day and recorded around 25,000 customer inquiries.
The ripple effect extended to the used car market, with CARS24 reporting a 400% increase in vehicle deliveries compared to a typical day and conducting over 5,000 inspections, the highest in four years.
In cities like Delhi, Gurugram, and Mumbai, dealerships reported deliveries three to five times higher than usual on September 22. Pasco Group’s Maruti Suzuki outlets in Gurugram delivered over 150 vehicles in a single day, five times the daily norm. Even smaller towns witnessed unusually high demand, with festive season sales projected to double compared to previous years.
The primary driver of this surge was the GST reduction from 28% to 18% for compact cars and SUVs. Affordable models saw price drops ranging from 65,000 to 150,000 Indian Rupees ($850 – $1,950), prompting customers to expedite their purchase decisions.
Maruti Suzuki’s Alto K10 and WagonR models saw the most significant boost in bookings. Other models like the Baleno, Swift, Brezza, and Grand Vitara also gained traction due to their reduced prices. The company acknowledged potential supply constraints for certain variants if the buying momentum continues.
The Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA) noted a steady rise in customer interest over several weeks. With improved affordability, many buyers are opting for upgrades to higher segments rather than sticking to entry-level models.
