According to data from the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (Gaikindo), VinFast unexpectedly became the top imported car brand in Indonesia in August 2025, surpassing competitors from China and Japan.

In August, a total of 4,589 VinFast vehicles were imported into Indonesia. This is a remarkable achievement, considering that just a month prior, the Vietnamese brand had never topped the list.

In contrast, BYD, the Chinese automaker leading the electric vehicle trend in Indonesia, experienced a sharp decline. BYD’s imports in August plummeted to 1,440 units, an 80.1% drop from the 7,235 units recorded in July.

As of the end of August 2025, BYD remains the top importer of vehicles into Indonesia, with a total of 22,964 units. The company has begun construction on an assembly plant in the archipelago nation, slated to commence operations by year-end.

Toyota ranks second, with 22,132 imported units during the same period, despite having a local production facility in Indonesia. Toyota continues to import certain strategic models from other markets to cater to diverse customer demands.

VinFast currently holds the third position, with a total of 13,372 imported units from the beginning of the year through August. However, its strong growth in August signals a significant breakthrough for the Vietnamese brand.

In Indonesia, VinFast offers a range of electric vehicles, including the VF 3, VF 5, VF 6, VF 7, and VF e34. Among these, the compact electric SUV VF 3 has garnered positive feedback for its affordability and urban-friendly design, contributing significantly to August’s import success.

In July 2024, VinFast broke ground on an assembly plant in Subang, West Java, with an initial investment of approximately $200 million and an annual capacity of 50,000 vehicles.

The facility is scheduled to begin operations in Q4 2025, focusing on producing right-hand-drive versions of the VF 3, VF 5, VF 6, and VF 7 for the Indonesian market and neighboring countries.

Establishing a local production base in Indonesia is a strategic move for VinFast, enabling the company to reduce logistics costs, enhance competitiveness, and leverage incentives for domestically produced electric vehicles.

Indonesia is one of Southeast Asia’s most dynamic automotive markets, attracting major players such as Toyota, Mitsubishi, Hyundai, BYD, and now VinFast. The government is actively promoting the transition to electric vehicles through various supportive policies.

It’s important to note that import figures do not directly correlate with sales volume. These numbers reflect supply trends and manufacturers’ preparedness to meet market demand.

Amid intensifying competition, VinFast’s surge to the top of August’s import rankings demonstrates the company’s strategic progress in Indonesia. This achievement underscores the steady realization of VinFast’s global expansion strategy.
