Recently, Vietnam’s coffee magnate, Dang Le Nguyen Vu, has added a rare Porsche 356A Speedster to his esteemed collection. This model, produced between 1955 and 1959, is a testament to automotive history.
In Vietnam, the Porsche 356A Speedster is an extremely rare find, with only a handful in existence. Mr. Vu’s model boasts a pristine white exterior, showcasing the iconic rounded and sleek design characteristic of early German sports cars.
The interior of this classic Porsche in Mr. Vu’s collection is remarkably well-preserved. Despite being over six decades old, the leather upholstery remains intact, with only subtle signs of natural aging.
The gold-plated Porsche emblem on the dashboard appears to have been restored, while the simple three-spoke steering wheel, devoid of buttons, embodies the minimalist design philosophy of the 1950s.
In Europe, the Porsche 356A Speedster is valued between $350,000 and $600,000 (approximately 9.2 to 15.8 billion VND), depending on its condition and provenance. Importing one directly could raise the total cost to over 20 billion VND, including taxes and shipping. Restoring an original chassis with new parts and interior refinements can also cost billions and require months of meticulous work.
The Porsche 356, the brand’s first production model, was manufactured from 1948 to 1965, with approximately 76,000 units produced. Over half a century later, nearly half of these vehicles remain operational, making them highly coveted among classic car enthusiasts worldwide.
The 356A Speedster stands out for its lightweight construction, agile handling, and pure driving experience—qualities that define Porsche’s sporting DNA to this day.
It is likely powered by a rear-mounted four-cylinder engine, similar to the Volkswagen Beetle, with displacements ranging from 1,290 to 1,588 cc, delivering between 50 and 130 horsepower, double that of its contemporary Beetle.
