Rumors abound that Toyota is considering expanding the Land Cruiser 300 lineup with a PHEV variant, following the debut of its self-charging hybrid model in the Middle East in 2025.
The Land Cruiser 300, introduced in 2021 on the TNGA-F platform, initially offered only two conventional engine options: a twin-turbocharged 3.5L V6 and a 3.3L diesel.
By 2025, Toyota added a self-charging hybrid variant, combining a gasoline engine and electric motor to deliver a total output of 457 horsepower. However, starting September 2025, Toyota halted orders for the gasoline version and restricted diesel supply in Japan, sparking speculation about a new electrified configuration.
While some predict Toyota may soon introduce a standard hybrid version in markets beyond the Middle East, others suggest the company is developing a PHEV variant. This model would pair the 3.5L V6 engine with a high-output electric motor and a larger battery pack.
A key advantage of this setup is its ability to operate purely on electric power in urban areas, meeting stringent emission standards while retaining the Land Cruiser’s signature off-road prowess and performance.
However, the addition of batteries and electrification hardware inevitably increases vehicle weight and reduces luggage space. It’s speculated that the Land Cruiser PHEV may offer only a 5-seat configuration instead of 7, along with a smaller fuel tank compared to current gasoline and hybrid models.
The concept of a plug-in Land Cruiser isn’t new. Since 2023, Toyota has been exploring plug-in hybrid, fully electric, and even hydrogen fuel cell options for the Land Cruiser 250 (Prado) in select markets. This indicates the Japanese automaker’s openness to deeper electrification of its flagship off-road SUV lineup.
If realized, this move would mark a significant milestone in the electrification journey of the globally renowned off-road vehicle.
