After nearly two decades as the reigning “MPV king,” the Toyota Innova officially exits the Vietnamese market.
In its place, Toyota Vietnam is set to launch a new standard version of the Innova Cross, marking a strategic shift as consumer preferences undergo significant changes.
Innova – The End of an Iconic Journey
Since its debut in 2006, the Toyota Innova has been a household name in Vietnam’s multi-purpose vehicle segment. Known for its durability, fuel efficiency, spaciousness, and ease of maintenance, the Innova has been a ubiquitous sight, serving as a family car, service vehicle, and corporate fleet staple.
However, after nearly 20 years, this beloved model has reached its end. Toyota Vietnam has confirmed that the Innova E MT, the last manual transmission variant, has been completely discontinued, with no new shipments planned. Sales figures reveal that in the first seven months of 2025, only over 200 units were sold, a stark contrast to its peak years when it sold tens of thousands annually.
The departure of the Innova signifies more than the end of a model; it marks the conclusion of an era for the traditional body-on-frame MPV that once defined Toyota’s success in Vietnam.
Innova Cross – The New-Age Successor
Rather than updating the existing Innova, Toyota has opted for a complete overhaul with the introduction of the Innova Cross, a crossover-style MPV built on a monocoque chassis similar to the Corolla Cross.
Currently, the Innova Cross is available in two variants: the Innova Cross V (gasoline) priced at 825 million VND and the Innova Cross HEV (hybrid) at 1.005 billion VND. These prices are significantly higher than what traditional customers, who often used the Innova E MT for service purposes, can afford.
To address this gap, insiders suggest that Toyota is preparing to launch a more affordable “base” version, expected to be priced between 750 and 760 million VND.
The new Innova Cross variant is expected to retain the 2.0L gasoline engine, delivering 150 horsepower and 188 Nm of torque, similar to the current Innova Cross V. Paired with an automatic transmission, this setup offers a smoother urban driving experience compared to the manual transmission of the Innova E MT.
As a cost-effective model, the new Innova Cross is likely to omit features such as a 360-degree camera, paddle shifters, and the Toyota Safety Sense package. Additionally, it will not include a sunroof, daytime running lights, or split second-row seats. The interior will feature manual fabric seats and halogen headlights.
The new standard Innova Cross is anticipated to launch in December 2025, with deliveries expected before the Lunar New Year.
