Toyota has officially unveiled the all-new Land Cruiser FJ ahead of this year’s Japan Mobility Show. This compact off-road SUV, affectionately dubbed the “Mini Land Cruiser,” is nearly 28 cm shorter than the Land Cruiser 250, offering a more compact and economical option for enthusiasts.
Compact Dimensions, Shared Platform with Hilux and Fortuner
The Land Cruiser FJ shares its ladder-frame platform with the Toyota Hilux pickup, currently available only in select Asian markets. Its overall dimensions are 4,575 mm in length, 1,960 mm in width, 1,855 mm in height, and a 2,580 mm wheelbase—approximately 280 mm shorter than the Land Cruiser 250.
Power comes from a 2.7L four-cylinder gasoline engine, delivering 161 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission and part-time 4WD. There are no plans for a U.S. or European launch.
Boxy Design, Classic Land Cruiser DNA
The FJ retains the iconic boxy design synonymous with Toyota’s off-road lineage, borrowing cues from its larger sibling, the LC 250.
Two FJ variants feature distinct headlight designs.
The front fascia offers two styles: a retro-inspired round headlight variant and a rectangular design with C-shaped DRLs. Both integrate a minimalist grille emblazoned with the “Toyota” logo. Plastic bumpers vary slightly between trims.
The body features sharp creases, flared fenders, and rugged protective cladding. The greenhouse design pays homage to its larger counterpart, though the thick C-pillar may hinder rearward visibility.
The rear sports a spare tire-mounted tailgate, C-shaped taillights, and an angular bumper.
A standout feature is the modular front and rear bumpers, allowing individual corner replacements to reduce repair costs after minor collisions.
Like the Hilux Champ, the FJ offers customization options, including MOLLE panels, snorkels, and off-road accessories.
Toyota emphasizes enhanced body rigidity for superior traction and handling. Extensive off-road testing refined approach/departure angles, ground clearance, and wheel articulation, ensuring authentic Land Cruiser performance.
Interior: Familiar and Functional
Inside, the FJ adopts Toyota’s signature utilitarian design—a wide dashboard, horizontal infotainment screen, and robust gear lever. Every element prioritizes off-road functionality.
The plastic-trimmed cabin features a large gear lever and off-road controls. Rear seating appears snug, with unconfirmed sliding functionality. Toyota Safety Sense is standard.
Alongside the FJ, Toyota is developing the electric Land Hopper, touted to surpass even the Land Cruiser’s off-road capabilities, though launch details remain undisclosed.
Technical specifications for the FJ are pending. It will debut in Japan mid-2026, following its Japan Mobility Show premiere later this month.
With its timeless design, modular construction, and proven off-road prowess, the Land Cruiser FJ is poised to captivate adventurers seeking unmatched versatility.
