According to the plan, Daihatsu will showcase a range of concept vehicles at the Japan Mobility Show 2025, embodying the company’s vision for the future.
Among these, the standout is the Midget X Concept—a mini electric pickup truck hailed as the revival of a compact legend.
The Daihatsu Midget, introduced in 1957, earned the nickname “the city workhorse” of Japan. Its tiny three-wheeled design made it a favorite among post-war vendors and delivery drivers, thanks to its agility on narrow streets.
In 1996, the Midget II debuted, blending retro charm with modern flair, and cemented its status as an icon of “small yet mighty” before production ceased in 2001. Two decades later, Daihatsu is reigniting this legacy with the Midget X Concept, a vehicle that embraces the electric era.
While technical details remain undisclosed, the Midget X Concept is expected to mirror the dimensions of its predecessors: approximately 2.9 x 1.3 x 1.65 meters, making it even smaller than globally recognized mini vehicles like the Pak Yak Pro or Telo MT1.
In a teaser ahead of the Tokyo show, the Midget X captivates with its retro round LED headlights, helicopter-style windshield, and semi-exposed wheels featuring integrated turn signals. A charging indicator light along the body hints at its fully electric nature.
The cabin features a centrally mounted steering wheel between two seats, evoking a futuristic driving experience. Additional highlights include a backpack-style storage compartment, an extended rear cargo area, and innovative hinged rear door handles.
Though currently a concept, the likelihood of the Midget X entering production is high. Daihatsu aims for it to appeal universally, not just within Japan.
Given Daihatsu’s strong presence in Southeast Asia, particularly Indonesia and Thailand, experts predict the Midget X could become the world’s smallest electric pickup truck—a new symbol of “compact, smart, and sustainable” mobility.
