The European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) has recently received a design registration for a new pickup model from BYD. This move signals the Chinese automaker’s continued expansion of its Shark pickup lineup into international markets.
The new model is believed to be the second addition to the Shark family, following the BYD Shark 6, which has been available in several countries for over a year. However, the Shark 6 has yet to launch in China. Industry observers speculate that BYD’s global strategy will persist with this upcoming pickup, targeting regions like Europe, Latin America, and Australia, where demand for versatile high-clearance vehicles is surging.
In May, a prototype of this pickup was spotted in China under heavy camouflage. Despite the disguise, keen observers noted similarities to the Sealion 6 SUV in the front fascia, wheel arches, and body lines.
Based on the EUIPO registration images, the vehicle appears to be built on a unibody chassis, departing from the traditional body-on-frame design of larger pickups. The rear end features a compact cargo bed, reminiscent of the Hyundai Santa Cruz or Geely’s Farizon FX. Horizontal taillights span the width of the rear, connected by a slim LED strip. Additional features include plastic body cladding, bed tie-downs, a roof rack, and a reverse camera. The fuel filler is positioned on the rear right, with a symmetrical charging port on the left, hinting at a hybrid powertrain.
While BYD has not yet disclosed technical specifications, Chinese sources suggest the new pickup will feature a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system. Speculation leans toward the DM-i or DM-p powertrain, which offers lower output than the Shark 6’s DMO platform but prioritizes fuel efficiency and cost-effectiveness, aligning with BYD’s global market expansion goals.
