The next-generation BMW X5, set to replace the current G05 model, has been spotted once again during testing. This time, its LED headlights are more clearly visible, bringing it closer to the production version.
Additionally, the images reveal ongoing debates about the vehicle’s design, including its smaller kidney-shaped grille, distinctive headlights with new daytime running lights, and a bold, angular front bumper.

The rear end, however, is less impressive, featuring XM-inspired taillights. The latest 2028 BMW X5’s front bumper appears bulky, with a dedicated space for a license plate holder. The wheels on this newly spotted prototype differ from those seen on previous next-gen X5 test mules.
This model features plastic cladding on the lower body, with some elements like side skirts and lower door panels still exposed. Another highlight is the introduction of a hydrogen fuel cell powertrain. Dubbed the BMW iX5 Hydrogen, it will be the brand’s first fuel-cell electric vehicle.
Detailed specifications for this variant remain undisclosed, though BMW has partnered with Toyota to develop this technology. This collaboration isn’t new, as both brands have been working on hydrogen powertrains for years.

Alongside hydrogen fuel, the all-new 2028 BMW X5 is expected to retain internal combustion engines, with partial electrification also rumored. Speaking of electrification, pure EV options are likely to join the powertrain lineup.
Thus, the vehicle will offer a powertrain for every preference, including the X5 M, which will remain part of the family, though it’s unclear if it will continue using a V8 engine.
The next-generation BMW X5 is anticipated to debut in the coming years, with reports suggesting a potential launch around 2027.
