While the new Land Cruiser FJ has been stealing the spotlight lately, a brand-new concept car inspired by the classic Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 is set to take center stage at this year’s SEMA Show.

Meet the Toyota Turbo Trail Cruiser—a concept car that blends the timeless design of the Land Cruiser FJ60 with an advanced suspension system and modern drivetrain. This vehicle takes us back to the ’80s while packing a punch with its new twin-turbocharged engine.

At the heart of this unique creation is a 3.4L twin-turbocharged V6 gasoline engine borrowed from the latest generation Toyota Tundra. Delivering a maximum output of 389 horsepower and 650 Nm of peak torque, this powerhouse is nearly twice as potent as the original Land Cruiser FJ60’s inline-six engine.

Beyond its impressive power, the new engine offers smoother, quieter, and more efficient performance for the Toyota Turbo Trail Cruiser. This transformation makes the classic SUV “more modern, drivable, and powerful than ever before.”

To fit the modern V6 engine into the ’80s-era chassis, engineers at Toyota Motorsports Garage crafted entirely custom components rather than opting for simple swaps. They designed a bespoke engine mount, a new oil pan, a dedicated cooling system, specialized wiring, and an adapter plate to mate the V6 engine with the original 5-speed manual transmission. The exhaust system was also custom-built, delivering a robust sound signature.

Beneath its vintage exterior, the Toyota Turbo Trail Cruiser retains its original ladder frame but with a 38 mm lifted suspension. The front leaf springs have been inverted for improved off-road agility. Polished beadlock wheels paired with 35-inch off-road tires give the concept car a rugged, commanding presence.

The exterior remains largely untouched, preserving the ’80s aesthetic of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60. Even the halogen headlights have been retained to maintain the vehicle’s authentic vintage charm.

The interior also remains largely original, with only a modern JBL sound system and a discreetly integrated center touchscreen added to the classic dashboard.

The Toyota Turbo Trail Cruiser will debut at the 2025 SEMA Show.

Marty Schwerter, Director of Operations at Toyota Motorsports Garage and lead on the Turbo Trail Cruiser project, stated: “The Turbo Trail Cruiser demonstrates how Toyota’s cutting-edge performance technology can seamlessly integrate into a classic, iconic vehicle. It’s a hot-rod approach with a distinctly Toyota flavor. The power, drivability, and reliability of the original Land Cruiser FJ60 are fully preserved in this concept.”

The Turbo Trail Cruiser will join over 20 other Toyota concept cars at the 2025 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, alongside the Camry GT-S and Corolla Cross Hybrid Nasu.
