Recently, Toyota unveiled its groundbreaking hydrogen fuel cell-powered pickup concept, the Tacoma H2 Overlander.
This marks one of the boldest projects from the Japanese automaker, as it introduces hydrogen technology to a mid-size off-road vehicle for the first time, rather than urban sedans or SUVs.
The Tacoma H2 Overlander was developed in a record-short timeframe of just a few months, thanks to the seamless collaboration between Toyota Racing Development (TRD) in California and North Carolina, alongside Toyota North America’s R&D division.
The exterior boasts specialized upgrades for outdoor adventures, including metal underbody armor, front/rear recovery hooks, a high-capacity winch, auxiliary LED lights, and a white-blue decal inspired by Toyota’s previous H2 concepts.
The front brakes are borrowed from the Toyota Tundra, while 17-inch wheels paired with 35-inch off-road tires enhance its capability to tackle rugged terrains.
At the rear, Toyota integrates a pop-up roof tent and a three-way opening cargo bed, transforming the Tacoma H2 into a true mobile home for extended camping trips. The rear door features a “roboformed” design, ensuring both rigidity and practicality with a large spare tire.
The standout feature is its powertrain. Toyota equips the Tacoma H2 Overlander with dual electric motors delivering a combined 547 horsepower, paired with a 24.9 kWh lithium-ion battery and a Mirai fuel cell system. The setup includes three high-pressure hydrogen tanks integrated into the chassis for optimal space and safety.
This system allows the vehicle to operate with zero CO₂ emissions, producing only pure water as a byproduct. Toyota has even developed an exclusive water recovery system, enabling users to utilize this water for washing the vehicle, showering, or other outdoor activities.
Additionally, the Tacoma H2 can power a small off-grid home or simultaneously charge two other electric vehicles.
Despite its new powertrain, the Tacoma H2 Overlander retains its off-road DNA. It features front and rear locking differentials, a TRD billet long-travel suspension system, and Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series shocks.
