On the morning of November 11th, the heart of Ho Chi Minh City unexpectedly became a rendezvous point for “four-wheeled legends” as a convoy of vintage cars bearing Russian license plates appeared, capturing the attention of a large crowd.
It was revealed that this is the Mekong Rally 2025, comprising numerous vintage car collectors from Russia, embarking on a journey through the three Indochinese countries: Vietnam, Cambodia, and Laos.
Each vehicle in the convoy has been meticulously maintained, showcasing the timeless beauty of European automotive engineering from the past century.
Leading the pack is the Jaguar E-Type convertible, an icon in the world of British classic cars. This model was once hailed by Sports Car International as the “most beautiful car ever made,” boasting sleek lines, perfect proportions, and the distinctive sound of its inline 6-cylinder engine.
Close behind is the Porsche 911 930, equipped with thick rubber bumpers to meet contemporary safety standards. The owner has customized it with an off-road style, featuring a lifted suspension and all-terrain tires, blending classic elegance with adventurous spirit.
Another 911, painted in sand yellow, also made an appearance, exuding the charm of classic European rally cars.
Equally captivating were the Mercedes-Benz SL R107 and W126 models, both customized with rally-inspired modifications. The SL R107 stands out with its large auxiliary lights at the front, while the W126 has been upgraded with a reinforced chassis and suspension for off-road capabilities.
Alongside the European models, the Mekong Rally 2025 also featured a Mitsubishi Pajero Evolution, a legendary off-road vehicle synonymous with Ralliart’s victories in the Dakar Rally. The commercial version of this model is equipped with a 3.5L V6 engine producing nearly 280 horsepower, an automatic transmission, and full-time 4-wheel drive.
The convoy also included the Toyota Land Cruiser, an iconic SUV renowned for its durability and off-road prowess. With its body-on-frame construction, powerful engine, and exceptional terrain-conquering abilities, the Land Cruiser has long been a trusted companion for cross-continental journeys.
The diversity of the convoy was further highlighted by the Chevrolet C/K, a classic American pickup truck restored and upgraded by its Russian owner with specialized suspension, auxiliary LED lights, and large A/T tires. This model is the precursor to the renowned Chevrolet Silverado of today.
According to the organizers, the Mekong Rally 2025 will depart Ho Chi Minh City for Cambodia, then continue to Laos before returning to Vietnam and concluding in Hanoi. The total journey is estimated at approximately 2,500 km, traversing various challenging routes and diverse terrains.
The event is not merely a road trip for Russian collectors but also an opportunity for vintage car enthusiasts in Southeast Asia to connect and share their passion for preserving 20th-century mechanical heritage. For the people of Ho Chi Minh City, seeing these classic Jaguars, Porsches, and Mercedes rolling through the streets evokes a sense of both novelty and nostalgia, offering a fascinating contrast to the city’s modern pace.
