The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ, a brand-new SUV, made its global debut at an event in Thailand in October 2025. Shortly after, Toyota confirmed plans to introduce this model to the Vietnamese market.

According to the plan, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ will begin commercial production at a factory in Thailand in 2026. In addition to Thailand, the vehicle will be exported to international markets such as Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. It is highly likely that the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ will launch in the Vietnamese market next year.

Built on the Innovative International Multi-purpose Vehicle (IMV) platform, similar to the new-generation Toyota Hilux, this compact off-road vehicle aims to offer the Land Cruiser experience to a new customer segment. The suffix “FJ” pays homage to the classic FJ40 and FJ Cruiser while symbolizing “Freedom & Joy.”

To maintain affordability, the vehicle’s dimensions have been reduced. It measures 4,575 mm in length, 1,855 mm in width, 1,960 mm in height, and has a wheelbase of 2,580 mm, making it the tallest model among Toyota’s IMV platform vehicles.

Both the interior and exterior designs of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ share similarities with the Hilux Champ but with more refined finishes. Notably, the front features an octagonal grille with the Toyota logo in the center and C-shaped LED daytime running lights. Customers can also opt for round headlights for a classic touch.

The angular design continues on the body with stepped wheel arches, a thick C-pillar, and a horizontally opening rear door with an externally mounted spare tire. The overall look is completed with black plastic fender flares and bumpers, designed in modular sections for easy replacement if damaged, a feature previously seen on the Toyota GR Yaris and upgraded Corolla.

Inside, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ features a multi-layered dashboard and flat door panels reminiscent of the Hilux Champ, but with higher-quality materials. Some interior elements are borrowed from the new Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, including a three-spoke angular steering wheel, a large central touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, digital climate controls, and a flat gear selector.

Unlike the Toyota Fortuner, this model offers only five seats. The cargo area includes a MOLLE-style mounting panel, similar to those used by the U.S. military, for attaching outdoor gear, making it ideal for camping trips. Unlike the Hilux Champ, the Land Cruiser FJ comes with the Toyota Safety Sense suite of active safety features.

The most disappointing aspect of this compact SUV is its engine. It uses the 2TR-FE gasoline engine, a 2.7L naturally aspirated 4-cylinder unit paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission, similar to the Toyota Fortuner. This engine delivers a maximum power output of 163 horsepower and 246 Nm of torque. However, this configuration is specific to the Japanese market. In other markets, the vehicle may be equipped with a more powerful turbocharged diesel engine borrowed from the Toyota Hilux.

Additionally, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ features a part-time four-wheel-drive system with a low-range transfer case and a drive mode selector directly inspired by the Hilux. The vehicle’s body and underbody frame have been reinforced to enhance performance. Toyota states that the vehicle has undergone rigorous off-road testing to ensure durability and performance, with wheel articulation comparable to the Land Cruiser 70.

While Toyota claims the Land Cruiser FJ has no direct competitors in the market, it is likely to face competition from the 5-door Suzuki Jimny. With its shared platform with the Toyota Hilux, the vehicle is expected to be significantly more affordable. It is also seen as Toyota’s response to the influx of Chinese SUVs into the Southeast Asian market, many of which draw inspiration from the Land Cruiser FJ40 and FJ Cruiser.

The price of the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ in Vietnam has not yet been announced, but it is expected to be higher than that of the Fortuner (1.055 – 1.395 billion VND).
