The arrival of the BYD M9 is shaking up Vietnam’s large MPV segment.

This Chinese-made vehicle directly competes with the GAC M8. While priced higher than its rival, the BYD M9 justifies its premium with advanced technology and superior performance.

The BYD M9 is available in two variants: Advanced (1.99 billion VND) and Premium (2.388 billion VND), slightly above the GAC M8’s range (1.699 – 2.199 billion VND). However, its operational configuration and features offer significant advantages.

The most notable difference lies in their powertrains. While the GAC M8 relies on a traditional turbocharged gasoline engine, the BYD M9 features a plug-in hybrid system (PHEV). This setup delivers nearly 400 horsepower, far surpassing the GAC M8’s 248 horsepower. The M9’s all-electric range reaches up to 170 km (NEDC), ideal for daily urban commuting without fuel consumption.

Beyond its power, the BYD M9 excels in fuel efficiency. According to BYD, it can travel up to 1,000 km on a combined gasoline and electric motor setup, averaging just 5.6 liters/100 km—significantly lower than the GAC M8’s 10+ liters/100 km. This makes the BYD M9 a cost-effective choice for long-term operation.

The BYD M9 features MacPherson strut front suspension, multi-link rear suspension, and the DiSus-C electronic suspension system. This technology automatically adjusts damping firmness based on road conditions, ensuring a smoother and more stable ride.

In terms of amenities, the BYD M9 outshines its competitor. It includes matrix LED headlights, a mini-fridge, a front passenger screen, and massaging front seats—features absent in the GAC M8. Both models, however, offer executive second-row seats with massage, electric adjustments, memory functions, and fold-out tables, catering to business professionals.

Safety-wise, BYD has yet to disclose the M9’s full ADAS suite. Nonetheless, it has achieved a 5-star C-NCAP rating, matching the GAC M8. Both vehicles come with 7 airbags and ADAS, ensuring safe urban and highway driving.

With its cutting-edge technology, performance, and comfort, the BYD M9 is a standout contender in the large MPV segment, particularly for those seeking a powerful, fuel-efficient PHEV alternative to traditional gasoline models.
