The demand for child safety devices in cars has surged in recent years, as more families prioritize protecting their children during travel.

Beyond the widely available detachable car seats, many parents wonder if there are vehicles with built-in child seats or boosters directly from the manufacturer.

Volvo stands out as the only brand in Vietnam offering integrated booster cushions in the second row. Renowned for its safety-first philosophy, the Swedish automaker leverages this feature as a unique selling point. Suitable for children aged 4 and above (106–150 cm tall), the booster seamlessly blends into the seat when not in use, ensuring both aesthetics and versatility.

Models like the Volvo XC60 and XC90 in Vietnam feature this innovation. While not a full child seat, the integrated booster ensures the seatbelt correctly positions across the child’s shoulder and chest, enhancing protection during collisions.

Despite the rarity of built-in child seats, Vietnamese drivers benefit from a more universal safety feature: ISOFIX anchors. Nearly all modern passenger vehicles, from compact cars to luxury SUVs, include at least two ISOFIX points in the rear seats.

ISOFIX is celebrated for minimizing installation errors—a common issue with traditional seatbelt-mounted seats. Its rigid connectors attach directly to the vehicle’s frame, ensuring stability during sudden stops or accidents.

ISOFIX’s greatest advantage is its compatibility with a wide range of detachable car seats. Parents can select seats tailored to their child’s age, height, or budget. According to the U.S. CDC’s safety classifications, car seats fall into three categories: rear-facing, forward-facing, and booster seats. Each type corresponds to specific developmental stages.

Premium seats now incorporate advanced safety features such as steel frames, energy-absorbing foam, anti-rotation mechanisms, 360-degree rotation, and side-impact sensors. In contrast, budget options often rely solely on soft straps and lack additional protective materials, compromising safety.

Historically, integrated child seats appeared in select models but have largely fallen out of favor. Chrysler and Dodge included them in minivans like the 1995–1999 Chrysler Town & Country and Dodge Grand Caravan, appealing to family-oriented buyers before ISOFIX standardization.

In China, high-end variants of the Roewe RX5 and RX3 offer integrated child seats. The RX5 Plus even includes both a booster and footrest for children 90–150 cm tall. However, these features remain optional and limited to specific configurations.

Globally, integrated child seats are not an industry standard due to high costs, limited demand, and challenges in accommodating multiple age groups.
