BYD’s Rayong plant in Thailand has officially rolled out its 70,000th vehicle just over a year after commencing operations.

The 70,000th unit produced is the BYD Sealion 6 DM-i, a C-segment SUV equipped with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) powertrain. This milestone vehicle was delivered to a local employee, marking a significant achievement in the company’s manufacturing efforts in Thailand.

The Rayong facility began operations in July 2024 with an annual production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. By November 2024, BYD announced the completion of 10,000 units, showcasing the rapid growth of its CKD assembly line.

Spanning 960,000 m², the Rayong plant currently assembles five models: BYD Atto 3, BYD Dolphin, BYD Seal, BYD Seal 5 DM-i, and BYD Sealion 6 DM-i. According to Car News China, BYD’s cumulative sales in Thailand reached approximately 100,000 units by October, solidifying its leadership in the country’s electric vehicle segment.

Beyond serving the domestic market, Thailand has emerged as a critical export hub for BYD. Electric vehicles produced in Rayong are exported to various Southeast Asian and European markets. In August, BYD shipped 900 Thailand-assembled Dolphin units to Germany, Belgium, and the UK via the BYD Zhengzhou cargo vessel. Localized production outside China enables BYD to bypass additional tariffs imposed by the European Union on EVs imported from mainland China.

Reaching 70,000 units in just over a year underscores Thailand’s growing importance in BYD’s global expansion strategy. This milestone also reflects the broader trend among Chinese automakers to shift production overseas, optimizing costs and mitigating trade barriers.
