While global consumers await the next generation, Toyota surprises with a special upgrade to the Corolla, featuring a larger size and superior technology.
Specifically, the two joint ventures, FAW Toyota and GAC Toyota in China, recently unveiled the Corolla and Levin L models. Instead of retaining the international version’s specifications, both ventures extended the wheelbase by 50 mm. This adjustment significantly enhances rear legroom, a factor highly valued by Chinese consumers in the C-segment sedan market.
In terms of design, the Corolla produced by FAW Toyota boasts a new look with a “hammerhead” front end, inspired by the Prius. The grille and front bumper are streamlined, while the rear features a striking LED light bar connecting the taillights, similar to the Allion—another long-wheelbase Corolla variant sold in Japan.
Conversely, the Levin L from GAC Toyota adopts a sportier aesthetic, closer to the Corolla sold in the U.S. market. Despite sharing the same wheelbase extension as FAW’s Corolla, the Levin L’s exterior design remains largely unchanged from its predecessor.
Both models feature a comprehensively upgraded interior. The dashboard is redesigned with a minimalist approach, incorporating a 12.9-inch floating infotainment screen and an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster. The center console is more organized, with high-power wireless charging integrated. The front seats are sportier with integrated headrests, and the interior materials have been refreshed.
Both the Corolla and Levin L are equipped with Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. The Levin L also includes an entertainment system powered by Huawei HiCar 5.0, running on a Qualcomm 8155P processor, reflecting GAC Toyota’s deep localization strategy in China.
Powering these models are familiar yet refined engine options: a 1.2L turbo delivering 114 hp, a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine producing 170 hp, and a 1.8L hybrid system with a combined output of 135 hp. All variants feature a CVT transmission and front-wheel drive.
The upgraded Toyota Corolla and Levin L are set to launch in China within the next few weeks. Pricing details have yet to be announced.
