Toyota’s Most Overlooked SUV Outsells Entire Mitsubishi Lineup Combined

Amidst a backdrop of declining overall sales in 2025, Mitsubishi faces mounting pressure to revitalize its aging product lineup and reclaim its foothold in the competitive U.S. market.

Mitsubishi’s current product lineup lacks a competitive edge in the fiercely contested U.S. market. With few standout models, it’s no surprise that the Japanese automaker’s domestic sales plummeted last year. The situation is so dire that even the Toyota Corolla Cross, a model that doesn’t typically draw much attention in the U.S., outsold the combined total of all Mitsubishi vehicles.

In 2025, Mitsubishi sold only 94,754 vehicles in the U.S., a sharp 13.7% decline from the 109,843 units sold in 2024. The downturn was even more pronounced in Q4, with just 21,354 vehicles delivered, marking a 21.2% drop compared to the same period in 2024 (27,125 units).

Demand for the Mitsubishi Mirage and Outlander waned significantly in 2025. Mirage sales nosedived from 29,766 units in 2024 to a mere 14,577 last year. This decline isn’t entirely unexpected, as the model has been discontinued in the U.S., and dealerships are merely clearing out remaining inventory.

More surprisingly, the Outlander, once considered Mitsubishi’s most competitive offering in North America, also saw a downturn. Sales fell from 45,253 units in 2024 to 35,895 in 2025. Even the Outlander’s plug-in hybrid variant (PHEV) experienced a slight dip, dropping from 6,975 to 6,294 units.

The aging Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross emerged as a rare bright spot for the brand last year. Its sales surged from 12,724 units in 2024 to 17,508 in 2025. In Q4 alone, the Eclipse Cross saw remarkable demand, with 5,166 units sold, making it the third-best quarter in the model’s history.

Mitsubishi’s U.S. sales in 2025 (units)

To truly grasp Mitsubishi’s position in the U.S. market, a comparison with Toyota is illuminating. In 2025, Toyota (including Lexus) sold 1,808,538 vehicles to American customers. Even a single model like the Corolla Cross effortlessly outpaced Mitsubishi’s entire lineup, with 99,798 units sold across the U.S.

Toyota’s dominance extends further: the 4Runner alone sold 98,805 units, surpassing Mitsubishi’s total. The Grand Highlander attracted 136,801 buyers, while the RAV4 remained a bestseller with 479,288 units. Even the non-mainstream Lexus RX achieved 113,256 sales, nearly 20% higher than Mitsubishi’s entire U.S. sales.

Mitsubishi is actively working to strengthen its U.S. presence, exploring partnerships with Nissan and Honda to shift more production stateside and reduce reliance on Japanese imports. Additionally, the company recently informed dealers of plans to overhaul its product lineup, potentially reintroducing a sedan and expanding into new segments like pickups and passenger vans. While specifics remain under wraps, leadership confirms North America remains a strategic priority.
