It’s been a while since we’ve seen any updates on the car collection of Vietnam’s “Coffee King” in Ho Chi Minh City. Naturally, enthusiasts are curious to know if this renowned entrepreneur has added any new vehicles to his garage in recent months. The answer is not just a few dozen cars, but also an incredibly rare find.

For those curious, the Nissan 300ZX is an extremely rare sight in Vietnam, with fewer than five known examples. The one in this entrepreneur’s garage boasts a stunning coffee brown hue, meticulously restored inside and out. Its aggressive stance makes it a fascinating addition to his collection.

The acquisition of this Nissan 300ZX further solidifies Mr. Vu’s JDM collection as one of the most extensive in the world. Beyond the 300ZX, Vietnam’s “Coffee King” also owns other iconic Nissan models, including the GTR and 350Z.

The Nissan 300ZX is a sports car produced across two distinct generations. Like other Z models, it was marketed in Japan as the Fairlady Z. The car was sold in Japan from 1983 to 2000 and in the United States from 1984 to 1996.

The “300ZX” designation follows the naming convention established by the first Z model, the Nissan Fairlady Z (S30), known in the U.S. as the 240Z. The “X” suffix, inherited from its predecessor, the 280ZX, signifies enhanced luxury and comfort features.

The first generation of the 300ZX, known as the Z31, was produced from 1983 to 1989. It became Nissan’s best-selling Z model to date, and the entrepreneur’s car is a Z31 variant. It has been customized with a racing steering wheel, cup holders, and a cigar ashtray for the owner’s convenience.

The Z31 chassis debuted in Japan on September 16, 1983, as the Fairlady Z. Designed by Kazumasu Takagi and his team, the Z31 improved aerodynamics and performance compared to its predecessor, the 280ZX.

The new Z model achieved a drag coefficient of 0.30, and many were equipped with Japan’s first mass-produced V6 engine, replacing the inline-six engines of earlier Z cars. According to Nissan, the new V6 aimed to preserve the sporty, six-cylinder spirit of the original Fairlady Z in a more compact and efficient package.

All Z31 models featured electronic fuel injection (EFI) and rear-wheel drive. There were five engine options: a 2.0 L turbocharged inline-six with dual overhead camshafts (used in the 200ZR), a 2.0 L turbocharged V6 with a single overhead camshaft (found in Japanese-market 200Z/ZS/ZG models), a 3.0 L naturally aspirated V6 with a single overhead camshaft (used in the 300ZX), a 3.0 L turbocharged V6 with a single overhead camshaft (used in the 300ZX Turbo), and a 3.0 L naturally aspirated V6 with dual overhead camshafts (used in the 300ZR).

To remain competitive in the sports car market, the second generation of the 300ZX was repositioned as a premium model. It was redesigned for greater speed and incorporated advanced technology, but at a higher price point than its predecessor. Prices increased steadily each year, leading to declining sales—a common trend in the premium sports car segment at the time. Nissan discontinued new Z-Car sales in the U.S. after the 1996 model year, though production continued in Japan until 2001 with limited units.

Car and Driver named the Z32 to its “10Best” list for seven consecutive years during its U.S. availability. Motor Trend awarded it the “Import Car of the Year” title in 1990. The Nissan 350Z, officially the Z33 Z-Car, succeeded the 300ZX in 2003.
