In Porsche’s ever-expanding 911 lineup, the Carrera S often flies under the radar.
While the Carrera T is celebrated for its standard manual transmission, the GTS hybrid and Turbo S models showcase cutting-edge technology, and the GT3 and GT3 RS remain the ultimate dream cars for many enthusiasts, the Carrera S is frequently seen as the entry-level, everyday-usable 911.
However, a closer look reveals that the Carrera S is far from ordinary. The latest upgrade, part of the 992.2 generation, features subtle design tweaks but significant technical enhancements. It retains the iconic 3.0L twin-turbocharged flat-six engine, a staple of the 911 for over a decade, but with hardware improvements borrowed from the previous GTS generation. These upgrades boost power to 473 horsepower and 530 Nm of torque while meeting the stringent Euro 7 emissions standards.
Many might assume they need a faster car, but the Carrera S is more than sufficient. Despite having 17 fewer horsepower than the formidable GT3, its broader torque curve allows it to aggressively tackle winding roads without breaking a sweat.
The most striking feature is its mechanical driving feel. Despite the integration of advanced electronic systems, the rear-engine soul of the 911 shines through in every turn and road feedback. The braking system is another highlight, offering a linear feel that lets the driver precisely sense the moment the pads engage the rotors.
The true value of the Carrera S lies in its versatility. When needed, it transforms into a pure sports car with a rigid chassis and stable handling, thanks to the optional PASM Sport suspension. Yet, in urban settings, it delivers a surprisingly smooth ride. The 8-speed PDK transmission shifts seamlessly, the visibility is excellent, and the interior retains elegant physical buttons instead of over-relying on touchscreens.
The biggest hurdle for enthusiasts is likely the price. Starting at $153,695 (4.04 billion VND) and potentially reaching nearly $180,000 (4.73 billion VND) with options, the Carrera S is no longer the “affordable” 911. However, this price tag buys an exceptionally refined vehicle—exciting enough for weekend thrills yet practical enough for daily commutes.
This balance between practicality and excitement makes the Carrera S a compelling choice for those seeking a sports car that does it all, without the extremes of other variants.
