Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the first details of the mid-life upgrade for its flagship S-Class sedan.

According to the German automaker, approximately 2,700 components in the new S-Class have been redesigned or completely overhauled. This substantial figure underscores that Mercedes-Benz views this update not as a minor tweak, but as a comprehensive restructuring to maintain its leadership in the fiercely competitive luxury sedan segment.

The most significant technical highlight of the upgraded S-Class is the M177 Evo V8 engine. While the M177 engine family has been a staple for nearly a decade, the Evo variant introduces a notable structural change. Mercedes-Benz has replaced the traditional cross-plane crankshaft with a flat-plane design—a rare innovation for V8 engines in luxury sedans.

This adjustment not only enhances throttle response and immediacy but also ensures smoother engine operation and optimized emissions. Amid increasingly stringent environmental regulations, this innovation is a critical yet challenging necessity for high-displacement engines.

The M177 Evo engine will debut in the S580 mild-hybrid model, delivering an impressive 530 horsepower—a significant increase from the predecessor’s 496 horsepower. Early reviews from international automotive journalists praise the engine’s instantaneous response while maintaining exceptional refinement. Following the S580, the M177 Evo is expected to power high-performance Mercedes-AMG models, including the S63 and potentially the upcoming CLE 63.

In terms of exterior design, Mercedes-Benz has adopted a conservative approach. The overall silhouette of the S-Class remains unchanged, preserving its timeless elegance and brand identity. Updates are focused on the front and rear lighting, where the redesigned three-pointed star LED motifs add a subtle yet sophisticated touch. This strategy reflects Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to refinement and design longevity, qualities highly valued by S-Class customers.

While the exterior changes are subtle, the interior undergoes a transformative overhaul. Mercedes-Benz has abandoned the traditional vertical dashboard layout in favor of a new interface inspired by the all-electric EQS.

The expansive curved screen and next-generation infotainment system promise to significantly enhance user personalization. This shift also demonstrates Mercedes-Benz’s efforts to bridge the gap between conventional internal combustion vehicles and electric models, preparing for the technological transition ahead.
