Recently, Vietnamese entrepreneur Dang Le Nguyen Vu made headlines by adding a rare Nissan 300ZX to his personal garage, a model scarcely seen in Vietnam.

Reports indicate that only a handful of Nissan 300ZX models are currently in use across the country. Mr. Vu’s acquisition stands out with its unique coffee-brown exterior and has undergone a comprehensive restoration, blending a rugged aesthetic with the timeless appeal of classic sports cars.

The Nissan 300ZX is a legendary sports car produced across two generations, continuing the legacy of the iconic Z series. Known as the Fairlady Z in Japan, it was marketed as the 300ZX in the U.S. and other regions. The model was available in Japan from 1983 to 2000 and in the U.S. from 1984 to 1996.

Mr. Vu’s vehicle belongs to the first generation, the Z31, produced from 1983 to 1989. Fully restored for the “Coffee King,” it boasts an aggressive yet nostalgic design. The interior is highly personalized to cater to his preferences, featuring a racing-style steering wheel, custom cup holders, and a dedicated cigar ashtray—a signature touch in his collection.

This model introduced groundbreaking aerodynamics with a drag coefficient of just 0.30 and marked Nissan’s first use of a mass-produced V6 engine, replacing the previous inline-six configuration.

The 300ZX offered diverse engine options, ranging from a 2.0L turbo to a 3.0L naturally aspirated or turbocharged variant, all equipped with electronic fuel injection and rear-wheel drive.

Following the Z31’s success, the second generation (Z32) elevated the 300ZX to a premium segment with advanced technology, earning a spot on Car and Driver’s “10Best” list for seven consecutive years. However, its upscale positioning and higher price eventually led to the introduction of the 350Z (Z33) in 2003.

Mr. Vu’s pursuit of rarities like the Nissan 300ZX highlights his distinctive collecting philosophy. As the automotive industry shifts toward electric vehicles, mechanically rich JDM classics like the 300ZX are becoming living relics. They embody a golden era of Japanese automotive engineering and reflect a unique appreciation for cars that combine aggression, luxury, and personal flair.
